Assistant Headteacher: Year 8 - 9
It has been an outstanding year for both Years 8 and 9. Mr Hawksworth was once again the Head of Year 9, and we welcomed Mr Scicluna to the Student Culture and Experience team as the new Head of Year 8. Both year groups had the exciting opportunity to choose subjects that really interested them by being part of the first ever “Elective” curriculum at WIS. This outstanding initiative allowed all students to get a feel for subjects that they have a passion for and want to explore further as they progress on their learning journey. Some feedback from parents was that “Wellington is building leaders for the future”. Mr Hawksworth led the Year 9 through their Option choices and the level of maturity they showed was excellent. Year 9 have grown and developed in the past two years under the tutelage of Mr Hawksworth and it will a pleasure to see them join the Upper School ready for their next step in education. Year 8 have had the opportunity to take part in many initiatives led by Mr Sciculuna including “Study Buddy” and his philanthropy project. These have been a great way for students to develop peer relationships. They were also the second cohort to work with “8Billionideas” showing that anyone can make a difference to the world if they have an idea. Highlights for both year groups were the amazing experiences of the International trips to Japan and Switzerland. These are a once in a lifetime opportunity and a chance to create memories to last a lifetime. EEE activities were once again full of success with Performing Arts and Sports teams excelling in both Year 8 and 9. Finally we must also congratulate those students who were part of the GEMS Wellington Cluster and Westend stage Collaboration who topped the UAE ITunes chart, an unbelievable experience and achievement. I wish you all an amazing summer and look forward to welcoming you back in August. Mike Ellis Assistant Headteacher: Year 8 - 9
