WIS Yearbook 2024

Innovation and Robotics

Students have embraced a journey of growth and innovation through a range of enriching experiences. We are proud to share that our Shape Robotics Internship is in its third year, where Year 12 students have been working directly with the Global Partnership Manager, Robert Widger, reviewing resources, creating content, and planning real-world market solutions. Salahaldeen Jamhour (Year 12) has been part of the internship since its launch, and has been given the prestigious responsibility of leading our student interns this year. Our students have also enjoyed preparing for the Yas in Schools 4 x 4 Challenge, and Mubarmij50, which tests their engineering skills and teamwork abilities in designing and building off-road vehicles to navigate challenging terrains, and obstacles. This year also sees the launch of our bespoke pilot programmes. The WIS Dare to Lead and 8billionIdeas Perform Better workshops have been successful highlights this year, where students have been learning about leadership potential, valuable soft skills, as well as physical and mental health. An exciting development in our drive of promoting student agency is the launch of our Echo Project in our Electives curriculum, namely in Sustainable Design, Entrepreneurship, and Coding. Students were given the opportunity to co-create content with subject leaders, learning about empathy, organisation, and creativity. The Robotics Roadshow is a firm favourite amongst our students, which was filled with Sphero coding challenges throughout

the school. Students enjoyed challenging their peers, as well as training our younger students. We have also been celebrating our new R!ed Robotics partnership with our Middle School students, as they explore our new kits in a successful EEE, and a coding competition. Our Lower School students have embraced robotics this year, using Micro:bits and Arduinos in our extra curriculum areas, engaging in hands-on learning and practical experiences. Our annual GEMS Global Innovation Challenge was a huge success, featuring “The Clean City” by Mark Klevchuck (Year 7), winning the Gold Award. “WasteBin” by Aryan Kaul, Vishesh Shah, and Tanish Barasia (Year 11) winning the Silver Award and “Mind Pulse” by Gabriela Mayorga (Year 12) winning the Bronze award. All of our participants took part in a GEMS showcase, celebrating all of the entries, whilst networking with industry judges. We honoured International Women’s Day with an AI and innovation twist this year, featuring insightful presentations from trailblazers such as Aarthy Rajesh, Software Engineer Consultant, and Tatianna Vasileva, International Project Manager of R!ed Robotics. Our school community enjoyed the AI and robotics showcase from a range of subjects, including Food and Art. As we reflect on this year of exploration, we celebrate the collective efforts of students, educators, and partners at WIS in promoting a culture of learning, leadership, and innovation.
