Approaching the close of an academic year can often feel like an ending, but it is also a wonderful time to celebrate all of the amazing milestones and adventures that have shaped our tremendous year together. The children have been able to capture incredible memories as they journeyed through Year 1; a journey that has been filled with laughter, learning and unforgettable experiences, from making new friends to discovering the wonders of the world around us. As they transitioned from Foundation stage, our children met every challenge the Year 1 Curriculum introduced to them with enthusiasm and fortitude. They have immersed themselves in their learning through practical and real-life experiences, both inside and outside the classroom, and developed their collaboration and communication skills whilst doing so. Our topics brought a plethora of opportunities to engage in learning in new ways, building confidence and a real understanding of just how powerful small voices can be. During our ‘Become a Zookeeper’ topic, the children
explored the issue of endangered animals through creating and presenting persuasive arguments. After taking part in a vote across the year group, the children were very proud to see their learning turn into action as they adopted a Tiger through the WWF. Their actions have helped to ensure future generations continue to see these majestic animals thrive within their own habitats and avoid the travesty of extinction. But they did not stop there! As part of our ‘Marvellous Monsters’ topic, they took on a virtual challenge to climb to the summit of Mount Everest, whilst simultaneously contributing towards our WIS Plastic Pledge and Sustainability Development Goals. As they reached climbing targets, they were able to choose to plant trees or prevent plastic bottles reaching our oceans, which they did with pride in the knowledge that they were once again making a positive impact on our wonderous planet. We have delighted in sharing so many of our magical moments throughout the year with our incredible parents,
who have supported the children and cheered them on at every possible opportunity. From Class Assemblies to Mini Musicals, International Day to our Parental Engagements and Theme Days, it has been wonderful to have you with us in school celebrating their achievements. Outside of school on trips to Dubai Safari Park and the QE2, the children have represented both their school and families to the highest degree possible, showcasing their impeccable manners, eagerness to learn and impart their knowledge to others, whilst they thrilled in all these experiences offered them. We are so proud of each and every child, who we have had the privilege to get to know this year, and equip them with the skills and voices that we know will enable them to make giant leaps as they progress on through the school. Go shine, our incredible, adventurous, compassionate Year 1s. Siobhan Kennedy Head of Year 1
