APRIL RADIO MESSAGE HE MADE THE STARS
by Dr. Walter L. Wilson
E ven from the first chapter of the Bible, we can find practical five word sentence sermons w h ich are given for our spiritual profit. In Genesis 1 :16, we discover a marvelous message which has caused some per plexities through the centuries. We find the positive statement, “He made the stars also.” That is a profound truth. In the first place, we might ask, “What did He make the stars out of ?” Can anyone tell us what stars are made of ? Actually no one really knows. These meteorites which some times fall to the earth are composed of 95% iron, 4% nickel and 1% man ganese and cobalt. But who can say with a certainty that they came from a star which had broken up. What would make them shine ? Ordinary metals don’t do this. Is it the light from our sun that makes them do this, as it does the moon? They are millions and billions of miles away from us and yet they shine brightly. We could also ask, “What makes them hang up there in the sky?” How is it that they are always kept in their proper place? There are also some moving stars. What makes them do that? Where do they go? What keeps them from colliding with one another? On the surface these might be some of the problems in our five words, “He made the stars also.” Why do you suppose He made them ? What good are they? Who can answer such questions except we think of the words of the Psalmist, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” There are 12 constellations in the Zodiac which mark the course of the sun. The sun moves in an eleptical orbit. How is it that it does so in such a manner that we can predict its movement with complete accuracy? God does things in His infinite majesty that we can’t begin to comprehend with all of our combined intellect. Suppose we knew everything that was on the moon.
What would we do with it? We can’t use properly what we already have. What tremendous costs and untold hours are spent on such endeavors. There are some stars which can teach us truths concerning the Lord Jesus Christ. There are three bright stars that bear names which refer to the Lord Jesus. One constellation is in the form of a woman lying down with an olive branch and sheaves of wheat. This speaks of her beauty and fruit fulness. Then there is the one with scales. The Lord said to Belshazzar, “Thou art weighed in the balances and found wanting.” The thing he lacked was faith in God. He hadn’t made any provisions for his sins and iniquities. He was a wicked man. He was ignorant of those things which are really important. He had never made peace with God and could never enter into His presence. Of course, this is true with all of us. There is only one way by which man can enter into heaven, and that is by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. If He is on the scale with you, then you are ac ceptable to God. Another interesting t h o u g h t is about the north star. The mariners have used it as a guide for centuries. It is always in its appointed place. That should teach us that we need to be the same, pointing the way to the Saviour who is the Bright and Morn ing Star. I am sure all of us have seen rush-
