emphasizes what happens to living saints. They are going to put on im mortality. In I Thessalonians 4:13-18, there is a question about the loved ones who have gone on and died. But if the Old Testament saints are not resurrected when Jesus returns for His own, will they be in the first res urrection at all? To be in Christ is to be in the Church. One can’t put Abra ham “in Christ.” The same would be true with the other Old Testament saints who will be a part of the resur rection but not distinctly of the rap ture. John the Baptist was an Old Tes tament saint, and he called himself “the friend of the bridegroom.” Q . San Luis Obispo, California — “Ca/Tl you please explain the difference be tween soul and spirit?” A. In fairness to all views, we should say that some do not make any differ ence between the two, the material and the immaterial. Our view is that there is a further differentiation in the immaterial part of man, both soul and spirit. verses, such as I Thessalonians 5:23 and Hebrews 4:12, which cannot be explained in any other manner. The same would be true with I Corinthi ans 3:1-2 where a difference is shown between a carnal and a spiritual Christian. The former lives in the soul realm while the other is in the spir itual. One of the best definitions on soul and spirit is in the Scofield Refer ence Bible. Basically, the body relates us to the world, the soul relates us to our own selves and desires through various human emotions, and the spirit relates us to God Himself. Where we read that man is dead in trespasses and sins, it refers to the fact that his spirit has not been made alive to be in contact and communion with God. Some erroneously hold that man is only body and soul and that he becomes born again, he receives the spirit. The Scriptures clearly declare, however, that man is dead spiritually. He is alienated from the life of God (Ephesians 4:18). Q .
