SASE Spotlight Ivy Tech Indianapolis Summer 2023 | SASE Quarterly Newsletter

School of Arts, Sciences & Education

A Note from the Dean: Dear colleagues,

I’m happy to announce the new title of our newsletter: SASE Spotlight! Thanks to all who submitted suggestions. Please see Codi’s note on the new title on the last page—and send her some cool facts for the next edition. Lots of activities and successes to read about in this issue: promotions, new degrees, conference presentations, creative work, awards, and so many great activities to engage our students and deepen their educational experience. SASE rocks! Many of you support and volunteer with community organizations. I’d like to plan one or two volunteer opportunities for our team for the coming year. If you have suggestions, please let me know, or perhaps suggest a volunteer day for your department. As always, I am grateful to have such caring and talented faculty and staff as colleagues. Sara

Professor Gerald Maki attended and presented at the NAFSA Conference for International Educators in Washington, D.C. on May 30 – June 2nd. Gerald and Muborak Kattaboyeva shared about their international virtual exchange experiences during a talk titled “Transformational Journeys: Termez State University, Uzbekistan and Ivy Tech Community College (US).” A recording of Muborak’s video portion can be found here as well as the larger slide show. Relatedly, Muborak presented about the collaboration with Ivy Tech this past month at an event hosted by the American Councils for International Education in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Students from both Ivy Tech and Termez State University had opportunities to share work from their spring collaborative global learning projects (SDG 5: Achieve Gender Equality and Empower All Women and Girls) during the recent SASE Showcase. You can read more about the collaboration on p.9!

Dr. Noor Feuza Hussain attended the American Chemical Society (ACS) Conference, which took place at the Indiana Convention Center from March 26th to March 30th, 2023. She attended many lectures, especially those focusing on student engagement. There were several key points discussed in the lectures that she felt were beneficial, from fun and easy chemistry lab experiments and successful teaching methods to racial inequalities in STEM education and strategies to overcome the issue. Additional key points include providing accessible, affordable, and helpful materials for students, as well as American Association of Chemistry Teachers (AACT) membership and benefits.

Congratulations to Maureen Keller, Matthew Kennedy, and Natalie Solmer! The three of them were selected as winners of the 2023 Excellence in Online Teaching award for their ability to create an exceptional online educations experience for our students. There were four total winners out of over 80 applicants. Maureen teaches IVYT113 via IvyOnline and is the course mentor, as well. She has taught the online class of Student Success in Advanced Manufacturing and Applied Sciences since 2016 and redesigned the course in 2022. In the course, students learn their Top 5 CliftonStrengths, and Maureen enjoys mentoring them in this area as a Certified CliftonStrengths Coach. Matthew Kennedy received the award for his use of technology, such as math videos with annotation, to help further student success by further explaining problems and concepts that might be challenging. Natalie Solmer’s application showcased her ability to create an exceptional online educational experience for her students in Creative Writing and Poetry courses. They are well-deserving and we are so proud to have them as members of our faculty!

On April 1, seven SASE faculty members joined Sampson Levingston of Through2Eyes for a Walk and Talk Tour of Indianapolis’ Indiana Avenue. Stephanie Robertson, Jack Cooney, Erica Barrow, Donald Weasenforth, Quinton Blackwell, Josh Phillippe and Amy Hemphill represented the Fine Arts, Social Science, Science, English, and Humanities departments on the two-mile exploration of the historic heart of the African American community in Indy. Levingston utilized a variety of presentation methods including quizzes, music related to the neighborhood, and storytelling to familiarize his audience with the many businesses, homes, and churches that formed this community. We were able to them compare the history of the Black community with present-day realities in the area, including a lack of walkable streets, a surplus of buildings razed for parking lots, and removal of much of the Black community’s housing to expand IUPUI’s footprint. This Walk and Talk Tour, as well as the other tours offered by Levingston and Through2Eyes, would be fantastic learning opportunities for other faculty as well as students/classes. Thank you to the SASE Professional Development Committee for funding this great opportunity.

On Tuesday, April 18th, Dr. Gayle Cosby and her EDUC 240 students (Health and PE for Elementary Teachers) traveled to IPS Montessori School #87 on a field trip. They heard from the Principal and the Community Liaison, and took a tour of the school. The students were able to gain a deeper understanding of the Montessori pedagogy through hearing from teachers and seeing classrooms in action. Together, the students also cleared the garden beds for the school and beautified the flower beds and memorial garden in the front of the school. Dr. Cosby stated that the students have been growing seedlings of various vegetables (tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.) that will be planted into the garden beds. Those vegetables will be available to students and their families. Overall, it was a great day of service and the beginning of a great partnership with #87!

ArtForce Exhibition From June 12 to June 30, nine students participated in ArtForce high school art camp, a collaboration between the Fine Arts Department here at Ivy Tech Indy and Arts For Learning. ArtForce was led by teaching artists Hector Delcampo and Nasreen Kahn. The focus this year was on professional and sustainable practices for emerging artists, and students were introduced to pyrography and stencil work for creating both high end works as well as production line items. Kayla Evans and Bailey McKendry, both fine arts students, served as college mentors while Jaqui Gaeta, who graduated this past May, volunteered as a teaching artist apprentice. Please enjoy these pictures of the students and their amazing artwork at the closing reception.

SASE Student Showcase 2023 This year, we put together the first annual showcase for SASE Students - and to our surprise, it went off without a hitch! It was humbling and heartwarming to see all the students having a good time, taking pride in their work and practicing their professional presentation skills while their families, friends, and teachers looked on. Please enjoy these photos and blurbs detailing this successful event.

Students in CHEM 106 have a project where they choose an element and do a deep dive on a real-world application of that element. Three students (shown above) presented their projects at the SASE student showcase (their elements were neon, helium, and calcium). They all really appreciated the opportunity to show off their presentations from class. One student was thankful for the opportunity to practice sharing her ideas in a public setting, and another student made some networking connections which should be beneficial to her academic and career goals.

A Note from the Editor:

Hello again! I’d like to start out by saying we received many title submissions for our newsletter and, after careful review, decided to go with “SASE Spotlight.” We felt this title was appropriate, as we strive to put a spotlight on all the amazing things happening in our program and show off all of our skilled and talented faculty. Thank you so much for all of your wonderful ideas and contributions, everyone! Moving on, nobody submitted any cool facts. So, here’s a cool fact that I love to tell people: Did you know hangeul , the written alphabet for Korean, is the only alphabet where we know exactly who created it? Indeed, the alphabet was created by King Sejong the Great in 1443CE. Prior to hangeul , Korean was written with Chinese characters (called hanja ) and only scholars could read and write it. Hangeul was made to be easily read and understood by everyone, regardless of class or education level—as a result, it often takes less than a day to learn it all! As always, thank you so much for reading this edition of the newsletter and for supporting the School of Arts, Sciences & Education here at Ivy Tech Indianapolis. Please look forward to the next edition!
