Dr. Noor Feuza Hussain attended the American Chemical Society (ACS) Conference, which took place at the Indiana Convention Center from March 26th to March 30th, 2023. She attended many lectures, especially those focusing on student engagement. There were several key points discussed in the lectures that she felt were beneficial, from fun and easy chemistry lab experiments and successful teaching methods to racial inequalities in STEM education and strategies to overcome the issue. Additional key points include providing accessible, affordable, and helpful materials for students, as well as American Association of Chemistry Teachers (AACT) membership and benefits.
Congratulations to Maureen Keller, Matthew Kennedy, and Natalie Solmer! The three of them were selected as winners of the 2023 Excellence in Online Teaching award for their ability to create an exceptional online educations experience for our students. There were four total winners out of over 80 applicants. Maureen teaches IVYT113 via IvyOnline and is the course mentor, as well. She has taught the online class of Student Success in Advanced Manufacturing and Applied Sciences since 2016 and redesigned the course in 2022. In the course, students learn their Top 5 CliftonStrengths, and Maureen enjoys mentoring them in this area as a Certified CliftonStrengths Coach. Matthew Kennedy received the award for his use of technology, such as math videos with annotation, to help further student success by further explaining problems and concepts that might be challenging. Natalie Solmer’s application showcased her ability to create an exceptional online educational experience for her students in Creative Writing and Poetry courses. They are well-deserving and we are so proud to have them as members of our faculty!

On April 1, seven SASE faculty members joined Sampson Levingston of Through2Eyes for a Walk and Talk Tour of Indianapolis’ Indiana Avenue. Stephanie Robertson, Jack Cooney, Erica Barrow, Donald Weasenforth, Quinton Blackwell, Josh Phillippe and Amy Hemphill represented the Fine Arts, Social Science, Science, English, and Humanities departments on the two-mile exploration of the historic heart of the African American community in Indy. Levingston utilized a variety of presentation methods including quizzes, music related to the neighborhood, and storytelling to familiarize his audience with the many businesses, homes, and churches that formed this community. We were able to them compare the history of the Black community with present-day realities in the area, including a lack of walkable streets, a surplus of buildings razed for parking lots, and removal of much of the Black community’s housing to expand IUPUI’s footprint. This Walk and Talk Tour, as well as the other tours offered by Levingston and Through2Eyes, would be fantastic learning opportunities for other faculty as well as students/classes. Thank you to the SASE Professional Development Committee for funding this great opportunity.
