Welcome to Sweiger Farms’ 30th Annual Bull Sale. We would like to thank everyone for taking the time to review the offering of Angus and Hereford bulls in our sale book as well as on our website. It is our pleasure to serve as your bull supplier.
The Sweiger family settled near Santa Rosa in the 1800’s. We have been blessed to be continuing the legacy that began over a century ago. We took a very aggressive approach to artificially inseminating a number of years back. By doing so, 80-90% of calves born each year are the result of artificial insemination by either an industry-leading bull or by a bull that we raised and selected to use in the herd. We select for performance traits that will benefit the commercial cowman in our area. We hope to see you all at this year’s sale, but if you are unable
to make it or you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Bulls will be available for viewing the Saturday before the sale. Having provided some of the veterinary services for the Sweiger family for over twenty years, I can vouch for the health of this herd. The Sweiger family was an early adopter of a MLV vaccination program in the cow herd as well as having an aggressive BVD surveillance program. In the early 2000s, they tested every calf born as well as any cow that didn’t present a calf at weaning for BVD. All testing was negative. Since then, for at least the past 10 years, every bull sold had been tested, and once again all were negative. Having a modified closed herd and limited contact with neighboring cattle, it was decided to drop the testing this year. This group of bulls would have been administered three doses of modified live vaccine as well as three doses of blackleg since birth. They received Balbazen in the fall as well as CleanUp pour-on. Most recently, at the time of the semen test, they were administered Express FP5 VL5 and poured with Cydectin pour-on. The bulls were semen tested according to the standards set forth by the Society of Theriogenology, and all bulls selling have passed this test as well as a standard soundness exam. • Increased adaption rate by farmers in Missouri of management practices that offer potential to improve long term reproductive efficiency of their herds and resulting profitability. • Expanded working relationships among farmers, regional livestock specialists and veterinarians that will enhance information exchange and improve management of cow herds across Missouri. • Improved heifer development programs through a Total Quality Management approach. • Increase marketing opportunities for and added value for Missouri-raised heifers. • Creation of reliable sources of quality replacement heifers in terms of genetics and management. • This program is unique in that it is first and foremost, an educational program targeted at improving pro - duction efficiency through increased use of existing technology, coupled with the marketing component. SHOW ME SELECT HIGHLIGHTS The Show Me Select Replacement Heifer Program is focused entirely on Missouri’s farmers and is dependent upon active participation from regional extension livestock specialists and local veterinarians, each of which are critical components of the agricultural sector of this state. The anticipated outcomes of this program include:
Sire Requirements: Eligible sires must have known ID, be registered by their respective national breed registry, and have complete EPD information. Sires will be evaluated for qualification in the program based on the EPD provided by their respective breed registry and not on EPD produced by progeny registration in any other breed or hybrid registry. Sires must meet calving ease EPD requirements. All Natural Service sires purchased after February 1, 2019, must have GE-EPDs. All sires used in conjunction with artificial insemination must have a minimum accuracy value of 0.6 on a BIF scale of zero to one for CED EPDs. Angus sires need to have a CED of equal to or greater than 7.0. Hereford sires need to have a CED of
equal to or greater than 6.8. Our sires that qualify carry the
logo.
