Two people and two dogs dead in Murder/Suicide

By Brandon K. Pierce Alabama Ledger DeKalb County authorities have reported that two people and two dogs are dead following an apparent murder/suicide in Mentone, AL. According to a press release from DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden, the 911 center received an emergency call from a male individual residing in Mentone. The caller reported a need for law enforcement at his residence due to multiple fatalities on Friday, December 6, 2024. While dispatchers coordinated the response they also maintained communication with the

caller, who disclosed that he had shot his wife and their dogs. He also expressed intentions to take his own life. The dispatchers continued to engage the individual in conversation until the call was disconnected. When deputies arrived at the residence they discovered the bodies of a male, a female, and two dogs, all with apparent gunshot wounds. Investigators commenced processing the scene and reached out to the JSU Center for Applied Forensics for support in evidence collection. The findings indicated that the male had taken the life of

the female before ending his own. The DeKalb County Coroner’s Office and the 9th Judicial District Attorneys’ Office were notified of the incident. “I would like to extend my gratitude to the Mentone Police Department, Valley Head Police Department, Ider Police Department, Valley Head Fire Department, and the North Lookout Mountain Fire Protection District for their assistance. Please keep all families involved in your thoughts and prayers for the weeks and months to come,” said Welden. The names of the those involved were not released.

21 People Killed and 60 Arrested for DUI

The Alabama Law Agency (ALEA) has concluded its Thanksgiving holiday enforcement period, which took place from Saturday, November 23, to Sunday, December 1. This critical initiative aimed to ensure the safety of all citizens during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year. During this nine-day period, ALEA Troopers investigated 473 traffic crashes, resulting in 21 fatalities. Nineteen individuals were traveling in vehicles equipped with seat belts, but 10 individuals did not use them. One of the individuals killed was a pedestrian and another was a passenger on an all- terrain vehicle (ATV). The deadly crashes occurred in Baldwin, Enforcement Cherokee, Clay, Colbert, Coosa, Dekalb, Elmore, Fayette, Geneva, Lee, Madison, Marion, Mobile, Perry, Pike, Tuscaloosa and Washington counties. Additionally, ALEA Troopers issued 5,264 citations and 2,730 warnings, along with making 60 Driving Under the Influence (DUI) arrests. The top contributing factors

in these tragic events include speeding, driving impaired and the absence of seat belt usage. “The loss of 21 lives during what is meant to be a joyous holiday season is devastating,” said ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor. “Our deepest sympathies go out to the families and friends of those who lost their lives. Each number represents a loved one whose absence will be felt deeply this Christmas and New Year. As we transition into yet another highly traveled period, please remember that the messages surrounding traffic safety are critical and awareness can help us save lives.” With the holidays fast approaching, ALEA urges all drivers to remain vigilant and practice safe driving behaviors. The potential for increased intoxication and traffic congestion heightens the risk of accidents during this festive time. "We encourage everyone to prioritize safety by not driving under the influence, obeying speed limits, and ensuring that everyone in the vehicle is buckled up," said ALEA’s Department of Public Safety

(DPS) Director, Colonel Jonathan Archer. “Creating a safe environment on our roads is a responsibility we all share. Let us honor those we’ve lost this season by committing to safer driving practices moving forward.” As we prepare to celebrate with family and friends once again during the Christmas Holiday season, ALEA invites everyone to join in the annual ‘12 Days of Safety’ Campaign by making a commitment to abide by traffic laws and share safety messages with loved ones ahead of the holidays. We can all play a part in reducing fatalities and ensuring the safety of our roads. ALEA remains dedicated to promoting vehicle safety awareness and will continue to enforce laws designed to protect lives on Alabama’s highways. The Agency’s ‘12 Days of Safety’ campaign will launch on Saturday, Dec. 21, and run through the New Year on Jan. 1, 2025. For further information on traffic safety tips and the upcoming campaign, please visit the ALEA website at www.alea.gov. agency threatened to cut the funding States use to run the very exchanges required under the Affordable Care Act. In the midst of all the gifts and good times, the holidays also come with a higher risk for medical emergencies, including stroke. Celebrations often include rich foods and alcohol, and busier social calendars can leave less time for exercise and sleep. Added stress from holiday preparations, shopping for gifts, increased expenses or traveling, along with millions of other holiday activities can affect the body. Cold weather can, too. Taken together, these elements can increase blood pressure or development of heart arrhythmias and blood clotting disorders – all of which could trigger a stroke. “During this busy time of year, it’s important to give yourself time to sleep and relax and to be mindful when eating and drinking to reduce your risk of an unexpected visit to the ER,” said Dr. Tapan Abrol, Neurologist with Gadsden Physician Clinics. “Balance the indulgent treats with healthy choices, make time for physical activity, connect with friends and family, and make sure you know the signs and symptoms of stroke.” According to a press release from the Gadsden Regional Medical Center, stroke risk increases with age, but strokes can happen at any age. The most important thing to do is recognize the symptoms and get help without delay.

● Arm weakness on one side ● Speech difficulty/slurring ● Time to call 9-1-1

Dr. Abrol added, “If you or someone you love experiences these symptoms – take action to get help quickly. Even if you’re not certain, get to the emergency room for evaluation by a medical professional. Stroke is a time-sensitive medical crisis and timely diagnosis helps to save your brain and life.” Every second makes a difference so Dr. Abrol stresses the importance of calling 9-1-1 rather than driving to the emergency room yourself. The paramedics and emergency medicine technicians of EMS can begin assessment and treatment and communicate with the ER staff while on their way. Stroke remains the fifth leading cause of death and the leading cause of long-term disability in the U.S. Early detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery. The providers of Gadsden Regional Medical Center are available throughout the holidays should you need them. Gadsden State to host commencement ceremony Gadsden State Community College’s Commencement Ceremony will be at 6 p.m. Dec. 19 in the Richard Lindsey Arena at Gadsden State Cherokee. Partnership Helps Aviation Students Soar A partnership between Snead State Community College and ACE Aeronautics in Guntersville has provided a once in a lifetime career opportunity for Aviation students. Pictured with one of the aircraft worked on by the ACE mechanics are Snead State Director of Aviation Nick Sauls, Cutler Lewis, Lillyian Smith, Greg Cooper, Chris Wood, and Jonah Hall. The Aviation Department at Snead State Community College has partnered with ACE Aeronautics, a Guntersville- based aviation company, to provide students with valuable career opportunities. This collaboration connects students with apprenticeships, jobs, and hands-on experience in a high-demand industry, bridging the gap between education and the workforce. Through this partnership, Snead State students have been able to interview with ACE, with several being offered positions working on advanced military aircraft. These skilled jobs offer unique opportunities to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings. Jonah Hall, a sophomore from Albertville and originally from Orlando, FL transitioned from working on cars to pursuing a career in aviation after earning a scholarship to Snead State. “I’ve always enjoyed mechanical work, and I sort of fell into aviation. It takes perseverance, and the days can be long. It’s been tough but rewarding.” Hall's proximity to ACE was a key factor in pursuing the opportunity. “It’s just 10–16 minutes from my house. Getting hired at ACE has been amazing. I’ve learned so much about rotary aircraft and complex terminology. We’re working on government-contracted helicopters. It’s a level of responsibility and opportunity that most students don’t get right out of school,” he said. Cutler Lewis of Guntersville spent 12 years as a truck driver before deciding to pursue a career that would keep him at home more. Using his GI Bill, he returned to his aviation roots after serving five years in the Air Force. “Working at ACE has brought me full circle,” he said. “The military background I have fits perfectly here.” Lewis praised the unique hands-on training he’s received at ACE. “Snead State teaches us general aviation, but ACE takes it to another level by helping us develop a precise technique and apply what we’ve learned. This is an opportunity of a lifetime, and it’s awesome that we’ve given this chance right out of college.” For Lillyian Smith, a sophomore from Albertville, aviation offers a creative outlet. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do until I toured Snead State and fell in love with aviation,” she said. “Working with sheet metal is a craft— it's challenging but incredibly rewarding.” Smith’s work at ACE has been a transformative experience. “Being on the job and seeing the process has been amazing. My supervisor is so patient and helps me improve every day,” she said.

Greg Cooper of Addison highlighted the rare opportunities offered by ACE. “As students, we’re getting to work on military rotorcraft—something most mechanics don’t experience right out of school,” he said. “It’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made.” Cooper noted how ACE fosters a learning environment. “The mechanics here are willing to help, and the projects are diverse. It’s a launching pad for anyone wanting to advance in aerospace.” Chris Wood of Guntersville hopes to continue with ACE after he completes the Aviation program. “I knew that Snead State had a school at the Albertville Airport, but I had never toured it. When Snead first started the program, it only offered Airframe (Technology), but once the College added PowerPlant (Technology), it changed everything. The opportunities we’ve had aren’t offered everywhere. We work within a structure, but we also work independently. We have the freedom to learn as we work,” he said. Rich Enderle with ACE Aeronautics emphasized the significance of the partnership. “We’re growing rapidly, and having skilled mechanics from Snead State is a huge asset,” he said. “These students come prepared, and the work they do matters. The life of the pilot depends on it.” Founded in 2015, ACE Aeronautics has expanded significantly, with its Guntersville location doubling in size in recent years. The company now focuses on entire aircraft modifications, including military helicopters. ACE’s involvement with Snead State extends beyond the workshop. As part of the advisory board for the College’s Aviation program, they help shape the aviation program’s curriculum. “This partnership is a win for everyone,” Enderle said. “The students gain experience, and we get passionate, skilled workers who are eager to learn.” “To have so many of our students utilize the opportunity provided by ACE is a huge deal,” said Snead State Director of Aviation Nick Sauls. “This is the first time we’ve had so many aviation students working in the industry in Marshall County. I’m proud that this partnership has proven successful, and I’m excited to see where this opportunity takes our students. Anyone interested in the Aviation Program at Snead State can contact Sauls at nicholas.sauls@snead.edu or visit snead.edu/aviation for more information.
