We’ll also profile a highly talented Sanibel artist who first made his name by engraving 58,000 names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Special is one fine way to describe our “Take Five” subject, a man who’s been named “person of the year” (quite a number of years) for how he gives back to our communities. It’s a moment forever etched in Lucas Century’s mind, a moment that led to a life-long career in
a squeegee across a window — I saw my reflection in the glass. I thought how cool it would be to put
the artistry of glass etching that’s brought him national fame, financial reward and great personal satisfaction. And it all began with a squeegee. “It was my last summer of college,” he recalls. “I had two courses left to complete my Bachelor of Science
graphic imagery on glass, and I was so excited I couldn’t put the thought down.” Fortunately, Century put the squeegee down instead and began his self-taught journey to create what was then an entirely new art form: photo stencil sandblasting. With samples in hand, he

Being affordable also led to his most famous work of art, one that got him the nickname “the guy who did the wall.” It was the early 1980s, and discussion of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall put the timeline to complete the 58,000-names project at three years and the cost in the millions of dollars. But Century had a different idea — his photo stencil grit blast technology — and when he met with the director of the project, showed him prototypes and promised it would take only months and hundreds of thousands of dollars to do the job, “He about fell out of his chair. They really felt like I was a Godsend and for me, it was a Godsend to work on that project. I had achieved probably the ultimate in an engraver’s career and I was just in my mid-20s. I knew it was my opportunity to create this as my life’s work.” His full time relocation to Sanibel occurred in 1985. Two years earlier, on a brief hiatus to Captiva Island, Lucas was enjoying some live music at the Crow’s Nest at ‘Tween Waters Inn

when he met a woman named Dee on the dance floor — and it was love at first shimmy. “We bought our cottage that year, and we’re still in it today. It’s provided the space for my work and for Dee’s garden, as well as our short trips to the beach. It’s just been marvelous.”
Reflecting (pun intended) on his art, Century explains he works mostly in glass “because I love the transparency and reflective quality. Clear glass captures the light in a brilliant manner, and allows the rest of the environment to work around it. I hope my art gives everyone a sense of clarity.”

Yet as successful as Uhler has been in business, he’s likely more renowned and respected for the work he does outside his office — for Tom Uhler is a man passionately dedicated to contributing his time and talents to multiple organizations that improve our quality of life in Southwest Florida. He’s been acclaimed Person of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and even Hero of the Year. He sits on many boards, chairs big events and has for many years served as narrator of The Nutcracker by Gulfshore Ballet. His energy seems boundless. Each issue, “Take Five” poses five questions to a community leader or personality that have not been shared in advance. Here, we catch up with dynamo that is Tom Uhler and learn what drives his passion to make lives better.

1 You’ve earned a variety of significant awards and accolades for your service to the community; where does that giving come from? As our lives have unfolded, my wife Linda and I have always had the luxury to focus on each other, our community and our work. I think both of us have charitable intent in our blood. I’m also an Eagle Scout and I think that’s a core tenet of Scouting, giving back to the community. 2 What are you involved with this year, and do you have an idea how many volunteer hours you log in a year? I don’t think I want to go there (editor’s note: said with laughter)! I’m very fortunate, I have a business partner who’s very organized, and we’ve developed an office system that runs very smoothly. It frees me up to spend a lot of time on the things I care about. This year, my involvement includes Southwest Florida Symphony, United Way and a board position with Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation. When did you begin narrating The Nutcracker , and has that been your most visible role? I think it’s visible certainly having done it for almost 10 years, but I think you’re also visible anytime you’re doing something big, such as the year I chaired the United Way Campaign, or when Linda and I chaired the American Heart Association Heart Ball. Whenever you’re proclaimed this or receive that award, you get your 15 minutes of fame. Is there one moment or instance that’s been most rewarding to you? If I had to pick one, it was when Jim Nathan of Lee Memorial Health System and I were chosen to be Junior Achievement Laureates of Lee County. Anytime you’re selected with Jim Nathan is pretty special. He’s obviously one of the best known people in the community for doing good. You deal with a physical challenge and don’t let it slow you down; what would you tell others on the sidelines about getting involved? I think you wake up every morning and decide if you’re gonna make it a good day or not. I am wired such that I choose to make every day a good day. I am very thankful I’m here. About the time I was diagnosed with cancer, a couple of pretty good friends of mine were diagnosed, too. One has since died and another is struggling, and as of two weeks ago, I am three and a half years cancer free. I’m not Superman. I just think you make a choice how you want to treat life. 3 4 5

Venturing into an intimidating, sometimes hostile environment and working in often- primitive conditions, this Sanibel couple nonetheless puts their time and talents each year to improving life in the mountains of Haiti. Here’s how and why they do it.
The inspiration for Dan Budd’s annual expedition to Haiti began some eight years ago, all thanks to an iPhone. It was Christmas, and his two sons were complaining about the fact that every other kid in the world had or was getting an iPhone — except them. “So I thought, well, it’s time to take these kids on a mission trip,” he recalls. “With the help of the Sanibel Community Church, we got 15 kids together and off we went. When we arrived in Haiti, the kids saw the living conditions, there was a lot of crying, everybody got sick and it was a rough trip — but that at least stopped the new iPhone talk.”
DanBudd is proprietor ofWildseedConstruction, a residential and commercial construction company located in Sanibel specializing in new, remodel, repair and renovation projects. This past October marked the eighth journey he’s made to St. Marc, a small village in the mountains of Haiti. It was also the second trip he’s made with only spouse Bridgit Stone-Budd at his side, who in her other life owns Sanibel’s The Pecking Order restaurant. “My brother is a missionary in China, so I guess this is my calling, my purpose, my way of being a missionary — at least for a week,” he explains. “You take the skills you’ve been given and give back as best you can.”

After their first Haiti project (adding a second story to a school), the focus of the Budd team’s energy has been the Mary Austin School in St. Marc. Here, he and his various workers (from a group of men from his church to one year, to his entire family including four children and his father another) have focused on construction and completion of the school — from the ground up. Over the annual seven-day trips (taken the first week in October, which is the first week of school in Haiti), they’ve framed out classrooms, built bathrooms, roofed the structure, stuccoed inside and outside, wired lights and fans, installed a 5,000 watt generator, built out an irrigation system, dug a well, connected with city water and even remodeled a kindergarten building across the street. Recent years have seen the crews become more Haitian, as Dan and Bridgit try to assume more advisory roles. In addition, the Budds have helped the school acquire access to land, upon which rice and other vegetables are grown to assist the school’s self- sufficiency. Recently, Bridgit has concentrated
on negotiating the best purchase price (and safe weekly delivery) of enough food supplies from a preferred Port au Prince vendor to feed the 300- some students at the school daily for the entire year (with enough money left over to pay teacher salaries). “For many of the students,” she says, “it’s their only meal of the day.”
The money comes from the Sanibel Community Church, Sanibel Rotary, International Rotary and
private donors. “We’ve worked with budgets from $30,000 to $120,000,” Dan notes. “However, it’s zero overhead work. Anybody who travels, including us, pays his or her own airfare, lodging and food. Every dollar donated goes to the project’s many needs, and projects generally take three years.”

It’s hard work, in tough conditions that at times can be dangerous. Everything they work on and complete has to be locked, because if it isn’t (including handles and door knobs) it’ll be stolen and sold at market. When the Budds travel, it’s typically to Port au Prince — at times with a translator-bodyguard- guide. “It’s a little scary when you’re sitting in

traffic with people banging on your door, and all you’re thinking about is how long will it be until we get to our destination,” Bridgit recalls. “But in hindsight, when you get back and hear about fatalities, it’s really scary. The more impoverished the area, the more you get hit up.” Dan Budd also notes that sometimes, their timing could be better. “Elections in Haiti are held in October,” he says. “You don’t want to be in Haiti on election day because of the riots. We know from experience.” Yet despite the primitive conditions, the underlying danger, the annual illness they acquire (which they fondly call the Haitian flu), Dan Budd and Bridgit-Stone Budd wouldn’t think of not coming back for more. “It was frustrating for me in the beginning,” Bridgit says. “I didn’t see anything good coming of it. It was like two steps forward, three steps back because of the vandalism. But now, I see progress and when I see one educated child, lifted up from the mess down there, that’s enough for me.” Her husband agrees. “I wouldn’t want it any other way, and I’m thankful we have the privilege to do this.”
