What is a Photofacial?

It would be easy these days to hear the word “photofacial” and assume it’s the latest craze in selfies. But your skin would miss out. At Beaty Facial Plastic Surgery, we use Intense Pulsed Light treatments to counter the effects of sun damage, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, and more.

DR. LAURA BEATY

What is Intense Pulsed Light? Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is similar to laser technology, but it is different. IPL employs a broad spectrum of light wavelengths, rather than the single wavelength used by lasers. This broad spectrum of light energy enables us to use IPL on several different skin issues. What is a photofacial? A photofacial is a non-invasive procedure where we direct short pulses of intense light onto the patient’s skin. This energy penetrates the skin and causes collagen and blood vessels below the epidermis (the skin’s outer layer) to constrict, reducing redness, sun spots, broken capillaries, age lines, and other issues. Results from IPL.

photofacials are not immediate, as the improvements show over the next few weeks as the body sheds damaged cells and builds new collagen and skin cells Who is the right fit for a photofacial? Photofacials are intended for people with white, untanned skin, as the procedure can cause skin pigmentation problems in those with darker skin tones. This isn’t a dramatic procedure, as it isn’t intended for problems such as heavy facial lines or severe acne scarring. IPL photofacials at Dr. Beaty’s are great for patients with vascular scarring, broken capillaries, sun spots, rosacea, uneven pigmentation, fine lines, and large pores.

When will I see results from a photofacial?

Immediately following your session, your skin will likely appear flushed and any previously broken capillaries will seem more visible, but both of these issues will resolve within a few hours. Patients usually opt for a series of photofacials, as results tend to build. In the next few weeks following your session, your age spots will fade, pores will shrink, and fine lines and wrinkles will gradually decrease in size. Pigmentation issues will even out, replaced by a radiant appearance on your skin.

ALLERGIES AND RHINOPLASTIES

DR. MARK BEATY

Rhinoplasty is a surgery that is designed to improve the appearance, and often the function, of the nose by changing the shape of its external framework. It is common for some of these maneuvers to change the shape of the nasal airway and/or improve support at the internal and external valves. Patients with allergies have swelling of the nasal airway when their allergies are active. These episodes of swelling and inflammation further restrict an already compromised airway. Whenever rhinoplasty maneuvers that improve the nasal airway are performed, there is an opportunity to improve breathing in situations in which the nose would swell, such as with allergies. Allergies are an inflammatory response mediated by the immune system. Surgical changes to the nose do not make any difference in the reactive response of the nose. However, improvement of the nasal airway can be an achievable goal during a

rhinoplasty procedure. Opportunities for improvement include straightening a crooked nasal septum, removing any spurs or irregularities, reducing the size of overly large inferior turbinates, and increasing the stability of the external nasal framework. When the nasal airway is enlarged and/or strengthened, the impact of allergic flare ups is significantly reduced. Nasal valve collapse is the most common cause of airway restriction directly impacted by rhinoplasty. The internal nasal valve is the area where the nasal septum, lateral nasal wall, inferior turbinate and upper lateral cartilage outline the nasal airway. Restriction may occur by deformity, enlargement, or malposition of any of these structures. Fixed structures, such as the septum and inferior turbinates, may be reshaped or modified to reduce restriction of the airway while flexible structures, like the upper lateral cartilage, can be spaced more widely to open the airway. The external nasal valve is the area supported by the columella and lower lateral cartilages, both of which can be supported or repositioned to open and strengthen the airway.
