A Quick Trip Around the GLOBE Recognizing Important Differences in Culture to Better Understand Yourself and Others

q Culture is the collective programming of the mind that distinguishes the members of one group or category of people from others. (Hofstede 1980, 2001). q Shared motives, values, beliefs, identities, and interpretations or meanings of significant events that result from common experiences of members of collectives that are transmitted across generations. Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) is an organization dedicated to the international study of the relationships among societal culture, organizational practices, and leadership across the globe. (http://globeproject.com) GLOBE 2020 is the largest cross-cultural study of human behavior ever attempted. It is designed to offer UpToDate rigorous scientific findings on cultural practices, leadership ideals, and trust dynamics around the world.

GLOBE: 1990’s to 2020’s

GLOBE 2020 Culture Dimensions • Uncertainty Avoidance: The extent to which members of a society avoid uncertainty by relying on established social norms, rules, and bureaucratic practices. • Power Distance: The degree to which power is distributed equally among the members of a society. • Institutional Collectivism: The extent to which members of a society encourage and reward collective action and collective distribution of resources in the society. • In-Group Collectivism: The strength of ties within small groups such as family and circles of close friends. • Gender Egalitarianism: The extent to which members of a society minimize gender role differences and promote gender equity and equality in the society.
