Muriel Brock FACULTY AND COACH EMERITA
Beloved faculty and coach emerita Muriel Brock, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at the age 94. Serving as the Girls’ Athletic Director at University Liggett School and Grosse Pointe University School for 37 years, Muriel was a legendary coach, educator, and mentor who inspired legions of young female athletes to work hard and strive to achieve their best on and off the field. As a result, the teams she coached — including field hockey, girls’ lacrosse, girls’ tennis and girls’ ice hockey (a program that she started at ULS in the ‘80s) — won countless local, regional, and state championships. Along the way, she instilled in her players a sense of confidence, sportsmanship, teamwork, and other vital life lessons that many lucky and grateful alumni credit with leading them into successful adulthoods. It should come as no surprise that Muriel’s greatest satisfaction as a coach wasn’t winning games, but rather “seeing students develop their own personal qualities and going out into the world as successful alumni,” as she remarked while accepting her 2012 Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame award. In addition to coaching, Muriel also served as a skilled College Advisor and started the University Liggett School Day Camp which has been a Grosse Pointe summer institution for more than 50 years. Muriel leaves behind an incredible legacy of love, warmth and leadership that will forever be woven into the tapestry of our school and she will be missed by the many people whose lives she touched at University Liggett School and beyond.
