The Spirit of the Season Burns Brightly

ENDING 2020 ON A POSITIVE NOTE

The holidays are in full swing and, if you’re like most families, you’re trying to decide exactly what you want to do and if your previous traditions will still work out. For my family, our Thanksgiving get-together is a great example. It went in a different direction than we had initially expected. We usually host a gathering and dinner at our house, but this year we decided to forego our usual feast. Thanks , COVID-19! Our immediate family made the most of Thanksgiving dinner, and we visited with family remotely via Zoom, FaceTime, and Skype. Even though we’ve already been using these tools more at the office, using them at home has been great as well. They really do reduce the feeling of distance from those we can’t be with during the holidays. Of course, now our attention is on the celebrations in December and January. Just like Thanksgiving, these festivities are going to be different, but we’re also heading into the holidays with optimism and a spirit of celebration. Things may be different, but we’re still excited! I can’t help but think of a scene from one of my favorite childhood holiday specials, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” It was Christmas morning, and the Grinch listened from his perch high above Whoville. He waited eagerly to hear the cries of sorrow and woe as all the little Whos woke to discover their decorations and presents had been stolen in the night.

song. Despite the Grinch’s best efforts, the Whos knew the true reason for celebration is gratitude and spending time with your loved ones. The decorations and presents, while nice, were just the cherry on top. This year, the Grinch is visiting us in the form of COVID-19. We’ve all felt its impact in varying degrees. Our kids are learning from virtual classrooms. Schools have modified or canceled athletic seasons. Our summer plans were scrapped. I haven’t seen my parents or brothers in person for over a year, and we’ve lost loved ones. But we’ve made do. Thankfully, my wife’s family is local, so we have had plenty of family time with them (from a distance!). This meant our kids were able to see their cousins and grandparents. I would even say that our family has grown closer despite our relatively isolated situation.

To add to the positivity, I’m also glad that I can say my office family has remained healthy over these past several months. On top of that, I’m grateful for the growth we’ve shared as a team. Most importantly, however, I’m grateful for the support we’ve received from all of you! With all of these great things coming together, I know we’re going to have a wonderful 2021. With that, I wish you all the best. As our families gather both in person and virtually, I encourage you to focus on the positives of the past year and how you can carry those into 2021. Think about what you can do for your loved ones and your community in 2021! Together, anything is possible!

Happy Holidays!

How Dental Technology Gives You More Time

Time is precious. Busy families are always looking for new ways to save time. Saving time while working, running errands, and making sure everyone is where they need to be, means you’ll have more time to do the things that really matter to you and your family. At Exceptional Smiles at Landerbrook, one of our goals is to help you find more time. This is why we use some of the best dental technology available today. Technology is all about efficiency and convenience, and we want to make your day as convenient as possible. This is how we use state of the art technology to make life better for you! Same Day Crown Technology The E4D and Glidewell Fast Mill IO are state-of- the-art devices that allow patients to experience a crown restoration in a single visit without the use of a third party dental lab. It’s quick and efficient, allowing us to complete the entire restoration process in our dental office — from preparation to placement — much faster and more precise than ever before. The iTero 5D Scanner The iTero hardware and software are designed to make your appointments a breeze by allowing us to

completely customize your treatment. Remember molding goop and bulky molding casts that were pressed into your mouth for what seemed like forever? Those days are gone! The iTero scans your mouth to give us a complete 3D digital model of your teeth and gums that we use to put together a plan that’s perfect for you. The scanner also detects decay between your teeth, allowing us to use this as an adjunctive tool for diagnosing cavities. Thanks to technology like the same day crown mill and the iTero, you spend less time in the dental chair and more time out doing what you love. It doesn’t get better than that — and you don’t have to take our word for it! “Dr. Schermer and his staff are professional, caring, and thorough. Our whole family appreciates his entire team! Exceptional Smiles at Landerbrook uses the most current technology for dental treatment and maintenance. Treatment plans and insurance copays are always explained before the appointment. There are never any surprises. The safety and comfort of his patients is Dr. Schermer’s top priority. His team uses all safety protocols and PPE necessary. We can actually RELAX going to the dentist knowing we will have a safe experience.” —Monique S.

Hate Shoveling Snow? Try These Hacks

Create a nonstick shovel. Wet, partially melted snow might work well for packing snowballs, but it’s a pain to shovel. It has a tendency to stick to the scoop and not let go — unless you spray it with some common household cooking spray. This will make it a lot easier for the snow to slide off your shovel. Just remember to wipe your shovel down afterward! Make your own salt alternative. Sometimes you start shoveling, only to find that the snow concealed a layer of ice that you can’t scoop up with your shovel. However, if you combine 1 teaspoon of dish soap, 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, and 1/2 gallon of water in a bucket, you can spread the mixture over the ice and melt it away, much like the salt you see on major roadways. Be preemptive with some tarps. Did you see on the weather forecast that your area is about to get some major snowfall? Throw down some tarps on your walkways and driveway. Then, after the snow stops falling, lift the snow off to the side, and your walkways will be as clear as if it hadn’t snowed at all. Blow the snow away. If you’re lucky enough to be clearing your driveway while the snow is still powdery, rev up your leaf blower instead of breaking out your shovel. You’ll be able to clear your driveway in a fraction of the time it would take to shovel and dump it off to the sides of your driveway.

Snow Shoveling Hacks How to Spend Less Time Clearing Your Driveway Every Winter

Everyone loves the snow — at least until it settles on the driveway, a barrier between your car and the open road. Shoveling snow off your driveway and walkway can be so tedious that you might be tempted to just hope and pray that the sun melts it all before you have to shovel it — which, of course, almost never happens. However, there are a few tools and methods you can use to clear the snow away that are faster than shoveling for hours on end. Check them out here.

With one (or a few) of these methods, you can clear your driveway and enjoy the fun side of snowfall in no time!
