C hapter E ight W h e n ONE SEES the terrible de vastation that sin has caused the grace and patience of our loving God. Every child bom into this world since Adam, with the exception of Christ, comes with a sinful nature. He is dead in trespasses and sins be fore the first breath is taken. The change can only be wrought when one accepts Jesus Christ as personal Saviour through His atoning death on Calvary’s cross. Look at Ephesians 2:4-10 to see this beautifully and aptly expressed. God, through Christ, introduces a new divine purpose. He is forming a new body of heavenly people called the New Testament Church. This is made up of called-out ones from both Jews and Gentiles. I love the way the section begins at verse 4, “But God” ! Here we see the wonderful divine in tervention in the midst of such a tragic situation. What a contrasting scene! As a result of man’s sin, God’s holiness demands wrath toward transgression. Yet there is grace in the sinner’s direction. Our Lord’s rich and exhaustless mercy is extend ed to him. The word RICH is inter esting. It means wealthy, abounding in material resources, abundantly supplied. What a way to describe our Heavenly Father. The tragedy that began in the Garden of Eden with the fall of Adam ended at the cross of Christ with the atonement for our sins. By faith we who were once dead have been made wondrously alive. It is by grace that we are saved. As redeemed souls, we will be for ever a demonstration of what God is able to do with dead, pagan, rebel lious, lawless sinners. No wonder Ephesians 2 :8, 9 are perhaps some of the most memorized verses of the Bible. They emphasize that God’s salvation is by means of faith and grace. It’s nothing that we have done. Salvation is wholly a gift. It
