Father spoke f r om heaven, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” If we desire the blessing of ffte triune God to rest upon us in His fullness, let us also be obedient to His commands. III. £ AP TI SM IS IMPORTANT BE- 4 CAUSE IT IS AN ACT OF OBE DIENCE (Matt. 28:19). It is well for us to consider that anything which involves obedience in the life of the believer is of vital im portance to his spiritual growth. When the Lord Jesus Christ sent forth His disciples as His ambassadors to carry the message of the gospel, He commanded them: “Go ye there fore, and teach all nations, baptizing Ihem in the name of the\Father, and of the Son, and -of the Holy Ghost" (Matt. 28:19). In Act$ 9, we have the story of the conversion of Saul. It is striking to notice that three days after the mar- - velous experience of Saul on the road to . Damascus, God spoke to Ananias and told him to go to inquire for Saul. Ananias went *in obedience to the voice of the Lord, and, putting his hands oh Paul, prayed for him that he might receive the Holy Ghost. Then we read, “And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized” (Acts 9:18). Saul was converted, filled with the Spirit, and then he obeyed the^ com- mand -and was baptized. IV. BAPTI SM IS IMPORTANT BE CAUSE IT SETS FORTH THE GLORY OF THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST (1 Cor. 15:51, 52). We have already learned that bap tism stands for death, burial, and resurrection. There is, however, one other important t r u t h typified by Christian baptism; that truth is the coming 'of Christ for His saints. This is set forth in 1 Corinthians. 15:51, 52, because the resurrection of the body is inseparably linked to the Second Advent. Thus baptism teaches both a spiritual resurrection to walk in new ness of life, and also a physical resur rection. Illustration Use John 12:24 to typify the result of baptism. Except the grain of wheat is put. into-its little grave that it may die, it cannot b^ar .fruit. Thus our “death” in baptism suggests the fruit fulness of o u r resurrection life in Christ. We have before us today a subject which is vital to every believer. The discussion centers around the ques tion, “Why is baptism important?” For Those Who Have Topics I. BAPTISM IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE OF ITS TYPICAL SIGNIFICANCE. •From Romans 6:3, 4 and Colossians 2:12 we learn that baptism typifies death and also resurrection. When the believer follows the Lord Jesus Christ in Christian baptism, he is saying, “Christ died for my sins, and I am crucified and buried with Him." How ever, that is not the only testimony that baptism suggests, for the believer acknowledges that as Christ came up ou^ of the grave in resurrection glory and power, even so shall he determine to walk in newness of life. Lét us ever remember that baptism is a testimony to the world of some thing that has correspondingly taken place in the heart of the believer. Therefore, it is only those who have been redeemed from their sins, and have become partakers of the resur rection life of the: Lord Jesus, who should follow Christ in baptism. It is a mockery Before the world for Chris tians to go through the form”of bap tism if they are unwilling to walk in newness of life, and to live the resur rection life which their baptism typi fies. II. BAPTISM IS IMPORTANT BE CAUSE CHRIST SET THE EXAM PLE (Matt. 3:16, 17). It is very striking that before the Lord Jesus Christ began the three and a half years of His public ministry, He came to be baptized. In that act of baptism, He was setting forth the very purpose for which die' had come into the world. It is written, “The Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Lk. 19:10). The only way whereby the lost"could be saVed was through Christ’s death and resurrection. Therefore, by His bap tism, He showed His absolute yielded- ness to the-will of His Father. He showed His perfect willingness to die. Do we stand ready to. say in oui; bap tism, “I am crucified w i t h Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me” (Gal. 2:20)? How wonderful it is to notice at the baptism of the Lord Jesus the manner in \Vhich the triune God hallowed that hour! Jesus Christ, the Son, was being baptized; the Holy Ghost ap peared in the form of a dove, and -the
