11. By Prayer “In nothing be anxious; but-in ev erything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Phil. 4:6, E.V.). “In everything by prayer . ; .” This is the only way.

by us; we pray you in Christ’s stead,- be ye reconciled to God” (2 Cor. 5:20). Seven things about an ambassador: 1. He does not appoint himself. 2. He does not support himself. 3. He does not belong to the coun try to which he is sent. 4. He is not in a far country for his own interests. 5. His instructions are in Book form. 6. Any insult offered to himself he does not treat as personal. 7. His recall is equivalent to a dec laration of war. —Sunday School Times. 8. The Friend “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may ob tain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb. 4:16). Many a troubled soul on the verge of nervous prostration has been saved from collapse by the patient and posi-. tive sympathy of a friend; and those who have, never known the friend ship and sympathy of Jesus have missed one of the greatest treasures of life- For Jesus is a Friend indeed. We have only to feel our need of Him and to make our approach to the throne of heavenly grace, and He will be by our side to sympathize, ■save, and satisfy. —A London Journalist, 9.. Transforming Light ' “In him was life; and the life was the light of men” (Jolin 1:4). An artist. once drew a picture of a wintry twilight, the trees heavily laden with Snow, and a dreary dark house, lonely and desolate,« in the midst of the storm. It was a sad pic ture indeed. Then, with a quick stroke . of a yellow crayon, he put a light in one window. . . . The entire scene was transformed into a vision" of comfort and good cheer. The birth of Christ- was just such a light in a dark world! —Selected. 10. Peace Like a River “O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river” (Isa. 48:18). As we follow a mountain stream on its journey down the canyon, we grow fond of its continual murmur, for it speaks a message of comfort to our hearts. The. stream does not seem to complain because it knows not the course it must'take down: the mountainside«. . . It sings as it goes, leaving its course of life to Him who guides all nature in its course. Would that we might trust ourselves to our Maker in this same way! —Fred Hartley Wight.* * Reprinted, from Nature Sermons by special • permission of Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids, Mich .

To meet the test, To find soul rest, Whate’er the day. Let come what may, God’s Word still stands! Lift heart and hands, ’ And find the victory way— “In everything by prayer . . .”

12. The Balance Sheet “But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ” (Phil. 3:7). Here is Paul’s balance sheet. He had posted his books and found that he had much which could only be charged off to loss. . . . So it often is in matters of the soul. The more we gain of self-righteousness, the less we have of God’s. . . . Mere religious ness does not save or satisfy. Paul, the one-time champion of formalism, had to reckon it all loss for Christ. —Keith L. Brooks. 13. Continual Communication “Abide in me, and I in you. . . . He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit” (John 15:4, 5). There is no such thing in nature as an intermitting communication of life—as from the vine to the branch, from the body to the members. Should there be in grace? Does not Christ give us His peace, His joy, Himself, to be our constant life and peace and joy and power?—J. Hudson Taylor.
