BUILDING ON THE SIDES OF A VOLCANO (Continued from page 416) true and in many ways in evidence. They too have changed one of their sacred days called’ “ Confirmation Day” into “ The Day of Conservation of Youth” and then dedicate their children to Socialism instead of religion. A recent parade held in Berlin of thousands of school children had in it banners with the inscriptions “ Away with God from the Schools,” “ Religion is an Opiate,” “ Down with the God Superstition,” “ Give us the Secular School.” One of the teachers states that he tried to get his children to go to the top of a church steeple to get a view of the city, but many refused to go because they said their parents would punish them if they entered a church. France, too, is moving in a peril&us direction because she is moving away from religious life and the church of God, She is rapidly becoming a Godless nation with no Sunday and no sanctity, living only in the sensual and for the ma terial. Thirty millions of her population never cross the threshold of any house of worship, leaving only ten mill ions who have anything at all to do with religion, and they in part are indifferent to it and victims of superstition. England, also, has a very real crisis in this .hour. It may be more perilous than the war period. Many of her writers and speakers are skeptics and live in the dark. The spirit ual for them has no reality. Bernard Shaw and his kind are spreading cynicism among the masses and have a vic ious relation to all classes. They are robbing many people of their respect for morals and established institutions. This is an awful responsibility and means a river of fire run ning through human society. The statesmen of England are not so concerned about economic progress as they are about moral decay. They are making an attempt to overcome this evil teaching and spirit by inculcating in the people a respect for century-old institutions and for the church which is the fountain-head of all morality. They are op posing bitterly a drift towards spiritual anarchy which must surely result In revolution and ruin. The people of England are feeling the trembling of the earth. May they soon turn to the only place of security. This materialistic spirit is permeating also all the na tions of Europe and the world, one of the results of which is a great volume of selfishness in all the world's life, which causes only separation and means the destruction of all brotherhood and real human relation. There is just now an abominable, diabolical, death-dealing tidal wave of self ishness. In this evident condition America has her special peril. If any nation in all human history ever had an abun dance of the material and was inclined to depend on her possessions and to boast of her riches, it is the American nation. When President Harding made his journey across this continent-, in almost his last address to his fellow-men, he uttered these memorable words: “ I tell you, my countrymen, the world needs more of the Christ; the world needs the spirit of the Man of Nazareth.” The President said: “ If we could bring into the relation ships of humanity, among ourselves and among the nations of the earth the brotherhood that was taught by the Christ, we would have a restored world; we would have little or none of war, and we would have a new hope for humanity throughout the globe. “ One more thought: I should like to have America a little more earnest' and thoroughly committed in its re ligious devotion. We were more religious a hundred years ago, or even fifty years ago, than we are today. We have . been getting too far away from the spiritual and too much absorbed in our material existence. It tends to make us a sordid people. The world war lifted us out of the rut. “ We found ourselves consecrated to the, defense of the republic and fighting for our ideal of civilization, and we in America were put on a higher plane. But when the war
