The Power of A Good Partner
When asked about the importance of family to her, Amy Seeks had one thing to say: it’s everything. She and her wife, Heather Lauter, have two sons: an eighteen-year old college freshman and a four-year old. On top of their family commitment, Amy and Heather are also both REALTORs ® , and lead a team of six agents at Compass. It’s a hectic but fulfilling life for them. They’ve learned to balance their careers and the needs of their family by being purposeful about scheduling and communication. “Our life is so busy that we can’t just let things happen. We have to plan. And while we talk about drawing better boundaries between our work and home lives, it’s tough. They kind of blend together,” says Amy. Thankfully, real estate offers the Lauter-Seeks family a lot of flexibility. They are able to shift gears as needed, and depending on what comes up at home, one of them is usually available to handle the fire drills that come with kids. From shuttling their younger son around to making sure their eldest has everything he needs at school, there’s always something to be done, and the flexible nature of real estate allows Heather and Amy to meet those responsibilities. Over the years, they learned the importance of scheduling their business and family commitments, and Amy’s big tip for busy parents: shared calendars. “After all, you wouldn’t miss a soccer game any more than you’d miss a showing. We approach all our responsibilities with the same mindset.” Overall, she says, real estate can be a flexible way to balance the responsibilities of family life while also carving out a fulfilling and successful career. “Whether full or part-time, real estate is a great job for parents if you approach it in an organized and purposeful way.”
