Once upon a time, in a not-so-faraway land, there was a small village where all the animals spoke in the rudest manner imaginable. No "please" or "thank you," just grunts, snorts, and rolled eyes. Among these creatures was a sassy squirrel named Sammy who was the cheekiest of them all.
Sammy loved nothing more than to scamper around the village, playing pranks on everyone. He’d tie the rabbit’s ears together, put nuts in the bear's porridge, and tell the owl that night had been cancelled. The other animals, tired of Sammy’s antics, warned him, “One day, your rudeness will catch up to you!”
But Sammy just flicked his tail and snickered, “Catch me if you can!”
One sunny afternoon, Sammy stumbled upon a large, golden acorn lying right in the middle of the forest clearing. Greed filled his eyes. Without looking around to see if it belonged to someone, he grabbed it. Suddenly, a loud voice thundered, “Who dares steal my golden acorn?” It was Gary, the grumpy old troll who lived under the bridge.
Terrified, Sammy tried to scurry away, but Gary was quicker and caught him by his bushy tail. “Gotcha! Now, for stealing from me, you must answer my riddle or be my dinner!” Gary bellowed.
Sammy, his heart racing, nodded reluctantly. Gary
grinned a mischievous grin and asked, “What is valuable but free, can be given but never bought, and is hated until it is missing?”
Sammy thought hard, his mind racing through rude remarks and sarcastic comebacks. But then, it dawned on him. He cleared his throat, his voice uncharacteristically humble, “It’s... respect?”
Gary stared, surprised, then slowly smiled. “Correct! Now off you go and remember the value of respect!”
Sammy dashed back to the village, a changed squirrel. From that day on, he always said “please” and “thank you,” helped the rabbit untie his ears, and even warned the owl about daylight savings time.
The moral of the story? Even the rudest nut can learn that respect is not just a word; it’s golden.
