Letter from the Editor

ideas for friends, family — and yes, for my own list to Santa (I was convinced he got a bulk discount at Sears). Inspired by this, we proudly bring you the Hometown St. Thomas Christmas Wish Guide once again, showcasing great local stores and gift ideas for your loved ones. It’s a little bit of nostalgia mixed with a chance to shop locally. While Christmas is a time to give to our loved ones, it’s also a time to support the local charities that make our community thrive year-round. From food security and healthcare to the arts and support for youth, there are so many worthy causes that could use a helping hand. And if you don’t see your favourite charity listed? That’s okay — your contribution will be welcome wherever it goes. As we wrap up the year, I want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! May your season be filled with joy, good cheer, and perhaps a bit of patience as you tackle all that Christmas shopping. And if you see Santa, do let him know I never did get my GI Joe USS Flag Aircraft Carrier, and that I am sure I can make room for it. After all, I have been an awfully good boy this year!

Happy December, everyone! Now, let’s get right into what happened to our November issues. Just as we were ready to go to press in October, we learned of a potential Canada Post strike. Now, I’ve always been a fan of Canada Post; they deliver thousands of our magazines each month with reliability that’s hard to

beat. But, with a looming strike, we didn’t want our magazines stuck in a warehouse. So, after some careful consideration, the managers of Villager Publications agreed that bypassing Canada Post for November was the way to go. We printed the usual number of magazines and worked with community partners to get them to you as best we could. We appreciate your understanding and sincerely hope we don’t find ourselves in this situation again! Through Hometown St. Thomas, Boomers & Beyond, and the Port Stanley Villager, we’re once again supporting Smiles for Seniors at Christmas through our Care to Share a Smile campaign. As you flip through the pages, you’ll notice ads with a small Santa logo on them, each representing a donation to this initiative. These funds are used to buy Christmas gifts for seniors living in long-term care across the county. This year, we’re thrilled to have donated $3,300, bringing our seven-year total to over $15,000. I must admit, as both a child and an adult, I absolutely adored the Sears Wishbook . Every year, I’d pore over it, gathering gift

Health for Life Sock Drive by Peri Hayes

Dr. Denise Colledge and Dr. Cassie Stafford celebrate the return of Health for Life Sock Drive, offering, “The inspiration came from a conversation with one of my patients, a dedicated teacher, who shared with me that some of her students arrived at school with socks full of holes or damp from the weather. Hearing about the challenges they face, I realized how difficult it must be for these kids to focus and thrive in class with cold and wet feet.” As Founder, Denise, describes, “I wanted to create something that not only supports these students directly, but also brings our community together to help those in need. Through the Health for Life Sock Drive, we’re making a real, tangible difference by ensuring these children have the warmth and comfort they need to learn, grow and enjoy their school experience.” “The Health for Life Sock Drive has been a cherished part of our community since 2008,” Denise continues. “Each year, I am incredibly grateful to have my mother and daughter join in by creating a unique display for our office; bringing a fresh, festive look to the drive. This tradition has become something special that our patients look forward to. For this year’s Sock Drive, we are planning a theme that is sure to bring smiles, encouraging everyone to get involved.” The engagement, generosity and unity in St. Thomas inspires Denise, as she thoughtfully details, “What excites me most about the Health for Life sock drive is knowing the impact it has on children right here in our community. There’s something truly special about seeing the community come together each year to make a difference in these kids’ lives.” Asked what this fundraiser means to Denise, she graciously responds, “Every pair of socks donated represents a little warmth, a little comfort and a reminder to these kids that their community cares about them. It’s about lifting each other up and creating a supportive environment for the next generation. This sock drive connects us, reminding us all how simple acts of kindness can have a lasting impact.” Launching in November, the Health for Life Sock Drive operates until January 3rd. Once the drive concludes, donations will be personally distributed to local elementary schools. Denise enthuses, “Donations will be gratefully accepted at my office located at 172 Centre Street. We are looking for new socks in any size or colour, suitable for children between ages four and fourteen. Thank you to everyone who supports this effort!”

With inquiries about the Health for Life Sock Drive, phone their office at 519-633-6565 and visit their Health for Life Chiropractic Facebook profile for information about the drive and community initiatives.

Salute to First Responders When it came to joining the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Constable Jeff Beaumaster always had a clear sense of purpose. “I wanted to police so that I could catch the bad guy,” Jeff says, recalling his earlier experiences as an auxiliary member with the OPP in Sault Ste. Marie. He appreciated the rural setting of the OPP’s work, which offered him a broader variety of responsibilities than in a city police service. “I liked what the OPP had to offer in addition to all the different roles and responsibilities.” After 25 years of service, Jeff has faced many situations that underscore the unique challenges of policing in a vast, often rural, jurisdiction. In contrast to urban police forces, where backup might be minutes away, Jeff frequently finds himself working with fewer resources and at greater distances. “We have a larger geographical area to police,” he explains, “So de- escalation is probably a bigger part of our role.” For two-person calls — such as domestic disputes or alarms — backup might involve waiting for support from neighbouring jurisdictions. Reflecting on the highlights of his career, Jeff notes the diversity of experiences that have shaped his service. “The variety and the freedom when you’re on the road are definite highlights,” he says. Among his proudest achievements was joining the OPP’s precision motorcycle team, the Golden Helmets. “I was a member for six years, and I’ve had the opportunity to escort presidents and be part of some amazing events.” Riding with the Golden Helmets became a passion, allowing him to represent the OPP and share the team’s skill with communities across Ontario. But the work also comes with its share of heartbreak. “The death and despair you see regularly are difficult to deal with,” Jeff acknowledges, noting that the impact can be especially pronounced when the calls involve personal tragedy. One incident in Delaware stands out in his memory: a call involving an infant in distress. “I beat the ambulance there, and the mother handed me her baby,” he recounts. “I still hear her screaming. I started CPR, but when the paramedics arrived, they knew right away that the baby was gone.” The memory remains vivid, intensified by the fact that his own child was a similar age at the time. “You’re human. You try to help, but sometimes the outcome isn’t what you’d hope for.”

Despite these challenges, Jeff has managed to find resilience through open communication and self-care. “I don’t have any problems talking to my loved ones and family,” he shares, underscoring the importance of seeking support when needed. “If you broke your arm, you’d go to the hospital so, if you’re not coping mentally, you should talk to someone.” When it comes to facing tough situations, Jeff credits his calm personality and training. “I’m pretty low-key, so I try to de- escalate situations.” That measured approach, combined with confidence from years of training, helps him manage the stress of each call. For Jeff, serving with the OPP is as much about personal strength as it is about community safety, bringing a sense of commitment and pride to every shift he serves.

Razzberry’s Tech Services Inc., Community Focused by Peri Hayes

Tailored to the needs of the community, these workshops present an opportunity for students to pose questions about iPad and iPhone use, along with learning about IOS and Android basics, using cameras for connecting with loved ones and so forth. Razzberry’s Tech Services Inc. recognizes that technology is a connective resource and with that, they are hoping to bring their service to senior homes. In regard to Bill C-27 advancing through Parliament, Mitchell presents on the agency’s Blog: “At Razzberry’s Tech Services Inc., we understand how overwhelming it can be to navigate these new regulations.” To conclude, Mitchell warmly assures that their service is, as he states, “A great opportunity for all ages.”

Mitchell Laframboise is the proud Executive Director of Razzberry’s Tech Services Inc. This non-profit agency offers, as Mitchell details, “Free, or low-cost digital literacy training and cyber security for underserved communities.” Mitchell ultimately aims to bridge the divide between human beings in the digital age, while utilizing donated tech equipment which Razzberry refurbishes to those in need. “I’ve had a passion for technology since the late 80s, and I love helping people. I was in the military for ten and a half years,” Mitchell voices, “I started with a for-profit business, before transitioning to this.” This Board consists of their Business Development Director, Community Engagement Coordinator, Marketing Coordinator and Volunteering Service Director. Mitchell has been offering computer literacy training and an array of tech support since launching on August 6th. Razzberry’s Tech Services Inc. has presented workshops throughout November across Elgin County libraries. Moreover, Mitchell is currently working on a partnership with Middlesex County libraries to further their community engagement. Mitchell and his team strive to honour the importance of digital literacy through empowering classes and supportive resources, revealing the ways in which they plan to expand workshops moving forward. Workshops are free to the public, due to greatly appreciated donations, grants and fundraising. “We are on our way to becoming a registered charity,” Mitchell announces. Registering in advance for these local courses is preferred, which is welcomed through the St. Thomas Public Library.

For those wishing to connect with Mitchell, contact information is available through the razzberrys.ca/ website. Additionally, an abundance of information is displayed under the ‘More’ tab on this platform.

The Importance of Safe Sport by MP Karen Vecchio

“Forcibly yanked my leg back behind my ear…snapped my hamstring and took part of my pelvis with it.” Through this study, we included recommendations to help eradicate abuse in sport that included a public registry of coaches and improvement to education and training for athletes, coaches and parents. Nationally, sports abuse and maltreatment can be reported to the office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner. This complaint mechanism is available to national-level athletes but not those taking part in local or provincial clubs. Provincially, it is up to the organizations to create a proper complaint process. Although the study has concluded, my interest and desire to ensure that sports are safe for participants continues. My role as a parliamentarian has provided an outlet for athletes to continue to share their concerns as they wait for resolution on their own complaints from provincial and local sporting organizations. The 24 recommendations made by the Status of Women committee to address safe sport were specific to national sporting organizations, recognizing the need to collaborate with provinces, territories and sporting organizations. Almost two years following the study, I have begun to see changes in some of the federal organizations, including the separation between the complaint management process, national sporting organizations and a discussion on the use of non- disclosure agreements. But realistically, how does this study impact local sports in our own communities? The Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner is not available to athletes who are not part of a national sports team. Organizations, including Hockey

In July 2022, Canadians became aware of allegations of sexual assault made against members of the 2018 Canadian Men’s Junior Hockey Team. It was reported that a lawsuit for $3.55 million was filed against eight former players and that Hockey Canada settled the case out of court. Following parliamentary hearings that began in June, focusing on the national sport organization and sexual assault cases, the Canadian Press reported that Hockey Canada was using a fund called the National Equity Fund to settle sexual misconduct cases. Sports in Canada, at all levels, were placed under the microscope. This toxic situation opened an opportunity for athletes to speak up and share their own experiences in sport. As the Chair of the Status of Women committee, I led an important study allowing athletes from various sports including gymnastics, skiing, and soccer to bring forward their stories and share reports of maltreatment at all levels of sport. Witnesses appearing at committee shared their firsthand experiences including psychological, physical, sexual harm and neglect. The witnesses spoke of abusive coaching and extraordinary pressures to perform. During this study, I hosted a viewing of CTV’s W5 documentary ‘Broken- The Toxic Culture of Canadian Gymnastics’. Gymnasts for Change and Global Athlete worked to bring forward the voices of hundreds of gymnasts who shared their stories of inappropriate touching, fat-shaming and physical injuries. Canada and Gymnastics Canada, receive fees from local and municipal associations with little return of service. Training manuals and services are available at a fee for service to local organizations. Sponsorship money received at the national level is for national sporting events only. What can we do in our own community and what are the local organizations doing to ensure our athletes come first? There is a great deal of pressure on our local volunteers who coach. Our community has several sporting organizations for minor hockey, baseball, soccer, ringette, dance, gymnastics, karate, football, and track & field. Following multiple emails to my office for assistance from individuals across the country on their own experiences, I have continued to work on files. Although I am not legally involved, I approach the files to identify gaps. Strategies and solutions mandated by Sport Canada refer to national athletes only, with a few contractual exemptions, so how are local associations and organizations working to ensure athletes at all levels of participation are safe? During the summer, I had an opportunity to begin my work at the local level with the assistance of the St. Thomas Stars Minor Hockey Association. My review has begun by completing the programs available to coaches and parents. As suggested by the delegation, the review of organizational structures for multiple sport disciplines is necessary. Locally, I felt greatly confident with the professionalism of the organization (or perhaps it was just the hardworking volunteers who have been working in our community for years!). From my experience with Hockey Canada and the study in the Status of Women committee, conflict of interest has been a great

challenge to overcome. Ensuring that individuals who violate the code of ethics are appropriately investigated, disciplined and sanctioned must be upheld. Opportunities to ensure that complaints are probably reported must be guaranteed. Regardless of the relationship to one another in sport, our principles must put the athletes first. Everyone has a responsibility, from those who coach to those who cheer from the stands. There must be accountability and mechanisms to ensure sport is actually safe. As a crazy parent on the sidelines circa 2000-2021, I know I can do better. Let’s win, but let’s always win with integrity.

Project Tiny Hope by Peri Hayes Sarah Lounsbury, Fund Development Coordinator for the YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin, beams while discussing Project Tiny Hope — a vision brought to life in the heart of St. Thomas. For nearly a century, the YWCA has been a cornerstone of affordable housing and community support. On a fully remediated 2.1- acre property at 21 Kains Street, Project Tiny Hope represents the continuation of their legacy. “This tiny home community is a true labour of love, made possible by the incredible support from so many in our community,” Sarah exclaims. For Lindsay Rice, Executive Director, Project Tiny Hope symbolizes hope, resilience and support for those in need. “These homes aren’t just walls and a roof — they’re a foundation for brighter futures,” Lindsay offers. Entailing 40 homes ranging from 440 to 850 square feet, Project Tiny Hope is a collaboration between the YWCA, Doug Tarry Homes and Sanctuary Homes. With their expertise in energy-efficient building, Doug Tarry Homes is creating these spaces to a ‘net zero ready’ standard. Eight of the 40 homes will be barrier-free, ensuring accessibility for all residents. The community will feature 20 one-bedroom bungalows, 14 two- bedroom units and six three-bedroom homes -- each equipped with an energy recovery ventilation system that provides both heating and cooling, with backup baseboard heating for those chilly winter evenings. Construction of their first bungalow began last summer, followed by a whirlwind of activity during Doug Tarry’s Blitz Build. As Sarah highlights, “Local homebuilders constructed eight homes in just 32 hours over two days, all captured in a breathtaking drone timelapse by Establish Media.”

We hope your holidays ROCKS! Merry Christmas, and see you next season. Situated near walking paths, Project Tiny Hope offers remarkable access to nature and to St. Thomas’ vibrant downtown. Schools, the St. Thomas Public Library and other essential services are all within reach, in addition to the supportive case managers and holistic resources that are supplied. Sarah shares her excitement for Project Tiny Hope’s impact: “We’re able to welcome 66 more people into Throughout Project Tiny Hope, a warm touch of blue reflects the YWCA’s care. Inside each home, residents will discover a full set of essential appliances, including a fridge, stove, washer and dryer. Beyond the homes themselves, the property will include an amenities pad for recreation, a naturalized playground, a program house with a shared learning kitchen, as well as raised garden beds for fruits and vegetables. As Sarah details, “We know that pets are part of families, so plans include accommodations for furry family members.”

supportive, deeply affordable housing. When contributors look at that first bungalow and say, ‘Look what we’ve built!’ — it’s such a powerful moment. It shows how a community driven by compassion and unity can create real change.” The City of St. Thomas generously donated $3 million and The Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative (COCHI) has

recently contributed $2.4 million, highlighting the broad and ongoing support for this cause. Donations have come in many forms: durable faucets, sinks and showers, concrete pads, flooring, roofing and landscaping. “We’re deeply grateful for the outpouring of generosity that has made Project Tiny Hope possible,” Sarah reflects. The Rotary Club of St. Thomas’ Open House by Peri Hayes The Rotary Club of St. Thomas’ Open House is on the horizon, with Mark Holmes discussing the details. To begin, he introduces his involvement with this group: “I’ve been involved in Rotary since 2010. I’m relatively new to this club -- I think, three or four years. I am currently the President, second year.” Asked what inspired this debuting event, Mark delightedly responds, “We were talking about it. Then recently, we went through a visioning process to plan where we’re going to be in the next years. There the idea was mentioned again, so we decided that we have got to do it. What we really want to do is let people know about our Rotary Club, what we have done and what we are planning on doing in the community. A lot of what we do is hand out money each year to different groups, like Destination Church and The Grace Cafe. We like to support any big project that aligns with what Rotary is about. We gave a sizable donation to Hospice of Elgin St. Thomas, Hospital Foundation, Project Tiny Hope and we also support smaller groups, The Salvation Army and YMCA, as well as a lot of international projects.” Their Open House is scheduled for Wednesday, January 22nd from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. A slideshow will be playing in sequence to complement an array of displays throughout the venue, which will offer insight into the Rotary’s various avenues: international projects, Youth Programs, their ambition to care for the local community through supporting Christmas Care, Inn Out of the Cold St. Thomas- Elgin and beyond.

“We are sending out selective invitations,” Mark announces, “Though anybody is welcome!” Mark concludes by describing what personally excites him about this celebration, offering, “The chance to share what our club does with the citizens of St. Thomas and area, because a number of people have never heard of Rotary before and what our club does in the community. This is a chance to introduce ourselves, form connections and share why we enjoy being part of our Rotary Club.” This event will be held at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, 275 Highview Drive. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year by Mayor Joe Preston As we enter 2025, we look forward to what will occur in the next year and look back at great events and successes in 2024. St. Thomas hosted many great events in 2024. To list but a few: our downtown’s Nostalgia Night with the streets of St. Thomas occupied by thousands of classic cars; Oktoberfest gathered thousands to the Moore St. area to be entertained by singers, dancers, and crafts of all types; the tapping of the kegs brought a true taste of Oktoberfest to downtown St. Thomas. Soon after came the Pumpkin Prowl. Hundreds of downtown merchants were involved and hundreds of costumed children and their parents safely roamed the downtown streets trick or treating. The downtown was again crowded and lit up with our Christmas tree lighting and Light Up Talbot, with horse-drawn wagon rides, warming stations and special goodies. Of course, not to be forgotten was our Optimist Santa Claus Parade. I would like to thank our Downtown Development Board and all of the volunteers who make these events in our downtown possible. Be sure to volunteer and help in all of these events next year. Pinafore Park was also home to many events in 2024. From Arts and Music Festivals to Puppy Parades, our beautiful park setting looked even better full of visitors and volunteers. Every Saturday morning and Wednesday night, visitors flocked to Horton Farmers Market. The Elgin County Railway Museum and all of its great volunteers offered many new events this year. Again this year, construction was also the name of the game, with a huge rebuild of Kains St. with a fun new roundabout,

a large construction project along 3rd Ave. and many others. Projects included a significant rebuild of Highbury Ave., Centennial and S Edgeware Rds. New connections from all of these streets will link the new widening of Hwy 3 to the new PowerCo site. Many other new road resurfacing and sidewalk installations also occurred this year. Watch for many new projects in 2025. St. Thomas continues to work to the future with the expansion of existing industries like Presstran, Formet, Element 5, Maxill and many others. Much new commercial growth, especially in our Downtown, shows the expansion of available shopping and services in our community. A generational change in employment within our city continues. Many new construction jobs, new and upcoming high-value industrial jobs and housing markets growing in St. Thomas and in all communities around us, set the pattern for today’s workforce and for jobs for generations to come. Modern new facilities like the modernization of the Diagnostic Imaging Department at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital and the construction of our new Hospice continue to show the types of ‘Smart Growth’ our city continues to plan and participate in. Thank you to all of the great supporters, including financial and volunteer efforts to make great projects happen. 2025 will show more growth of this type of facility growth, including the construction of a new Animal Center. Housing continues to be a huge priority for St. Thomas and neighbours. With the growth in our population comes the requirement to continue building all types of housing. We have
