In 1863, Thomas Nast, an American cartoonist, defined the modern Santa Claus image. His depiction of Santa was much like today, but not necessarily in red robes. The use of a jolly, happy, Santa dressed in red, by a cola company in the early 1930s has engrained the popular culture image to this day.
