Stay Safe on Winter Roads

Winter may be in its last month for the year, but it certainly doesn’t feel like it. With temperatures still reaching bitter lows outside and snow continuing to accumulate, it’s important to be aware of conditions. Winter awareness and preparation becomes especially important when driving, since the slightest mistake can have catastrophic results. Even if you already have, it’s worth inspecting your vehicle to make sure everything is in order. First, check your tire pressure. Ensure that it matches the manufacturer-recommended PSI on the sticker on your vehicle’s driver door or inside its manual. Then, check your windshield wiper blades. Are they wiping off water properly or dirtying your windshield and making the problem worse? Besides considering replacing the blades, you may want to flush out your washer fluid and replace it with a type made specifically for winter. Do you keep an emergency safety kit in your car? If not, we’d highly recommend you pick one up. From our experience with car accident clients, we know that a safety kit can make all the difference in a sticky winter situation.

help you drive safely in the snow and ice, including road conditions, weather updates, driving tips, snowplow updates, and even vehicle prep checklists. But perhaps the most valuable advice they provide is their tagline: “Ice and snow, take it slow.” It’s good advice for everyone on the road during winter. If you find yourself hurrying while the roads are icy, plan ahead next time and give yourself some wiggle room. It can mean the difference between making it to your destination safely and a potentially fatal collision. In our firm, we see people every day whose lives have been tarnished by serious accidents, many of which occur in the midst of winter storms. With this in mind, anything that could help prevent a dangerous accident this season is worth trying. We hope you stay safe during this last month of winter. In the meantime, be prepared, and be careful.
