Ward 11 Update from City Hall by Skylar Franke, Ward 11 London City Council 519-661-2489, extension 4011 • sfranke@london.ca Winter is here and I’m excited for when the Coves freeze over and the world is blanketed in snow. I always find winter more fun when I fill it with activities like tobogganing, skating and drinking hot chocolate while snuggled up with a book. This month, I’m looking forward to cozying up with tea and reading The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Speaking of recommendations, given the holiday season is upon us I thought I’d give you some quick gift ideas for that special someone. I love giving experiences, consumables, or secondhand gifts in efforts to keep our money local! • Take someone out to dinner (so many great restaurants to pick from!) • Check out one of the many holiday bazaars • Get tickets for a local theatre production or music performance • Go on a hike through the Coves • Bring a board game and have a drink at Storm Stayed Brewery • Catch a movie at the Hyland Cinema • Go for a walk and pick up a coffee from Locomotive or Sidetracks and a treat from the Baker’s Table bakery and try on some cute vintage at Filthy Rebena • Many local shops for cute gifts like birdseed from Feather- fields or a record from Grooves • Offer to help your parents out with a home project and pick up supplies at Tuckey’s • Buy a massage gift certificate TVDSB (Ward 11) Update by Trustees Pizzolato and Polhill (Wards 1, 11, 12, 14) Hello, TVDSB families and community members! As your trustees, we are here to share updates on what’s happening in our schools this December. Celebrating Inclusivity and Awareness December brings special days that highlight inclusion, empathy, and action: • December 3: International Day of Persons with Disabilities , which promotes rights and well-being for all. • December 6: National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women , honouring the lives lost at Polytechnique Montréal and addressing gender-based violence. • December 10 : International Human Rights Day , reminding us of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and our shared responsibility to uphold it. During Local Government Week, we visited Grade 5 and Grade 10 civics classes to talk about the role of trustees. It was a great opportunity to hear directly from students about what they see as the biggest needs in schools today—many spoke about the importance of mental health support and resources for inclusive learning environments. We’d like to recognize the Thames Valley Education Foundation (TVEF) for its important work in fundraising to support students and families in need through the Caring Fund. By providing timely assistance, the foundation truly helps families facing challenging situations.

If you have questions or concerns, your child’s teacher is the first contact, followed by the principal, superintendent, and, us, your trustees. For contact information, visit tvdsb.ca and click “Contact Us.” We have an upcoming board meeting on December 10 at 7 pm. These meetings are open to the public, and we welcome your participation. As we wrap up the year, we want to extend our best wishes for a joyful and restful holiday season to all our families, students, and staff. Whether you’re celebrating or simply taking some time to relax, we hope you enjoy a season filled with happiness, connection, and good health. We look forward to welcoming students back on January 6 with renewed energy for a fantastic year ahead! Thank you for your ongoing support, and please feel free to reach out with any questions. We are here to support our students, families, and communities as we look ahead to a bright new year! And of course, I love checking out Christmas in the Village – it feels like Whoville around here in December! Cold season is upon us Don’t forget to get your flu & COVID-19 shots to stay healthy over the holidays. Hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and Merry Christmas!! Skylar

These Walls Lyrics by Emma Donoghue and Una Roulston with music by Brian Ratcliffe to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Wesley-Knox United Church – November 3, 2024. Verse 1 “The OSCO Team did an awesome job on Virtual Gathering: Mario the Music Production work, Eric did a fabulous job on MCing, Amanda Silent Auction, Sam coordinating our Virtual Vendors, Nicole on vinettes, Deb and Dave for their support and Gordon for sorting out the finances. Shayne and Monica provided the Village Ride, ReForest London gave away trees and Growing Chefs provided a wonderful Tea for Two Takeaway. Also this year we encouraged the community to unplug with two scavenger hunts and purchased gift cards from our business community to provide support”. Funding was provided to Community Projects, Herb Boxes, Tecumseh Cookbook, South Collegiate Awards, YOU Another long night – another day – One week and then the next ticks by. Seasons turn in their own sweet way, The years will take their own sweet time. Over centuries of weather, Down the changing generations, We’ve always had to place our trust in These foundations. Chorus These walls stand – So far, so good These doors open – One at a time This roof holds – With a little help This glass makes rainbows of the light. Verse 2 Lightning strikes, the steeple burns. Mend and patch, repair, rebuild. Rain, sun, ice, the season turns. Plates get emptied, then refilled. Decades of routine disasters, Waves of desperate migrations. We keep on choosing to place our trust in These foundations. Chorus These walls stand – We build them tall These doors open – Throw them wide This roof holds – Keep it high This glass makes rainbows of the light. Bridge Knock, knock, knock – Do you hear the knocking? That’s the world knocking at this door Stomp, stomp, stomp – Do you hear the footsteps? The feet of the world walking on this floor Chorus These walls stand – They’re made of voices These doors open – Let out the song This roof holds – Lifted by music This glass makes rainbows of the light. 760 Hyde Park Road, London www.gordonsgold.ca 519-473-3988 CELEBRATING THE SPECIAL OCCASIONS IN YOUR LIFE 760 Hyde Park Road, London | www.gordonsgold.ca | 519-473-3988 760 Hyde Park Road, London www.gordonsgold.ca 519-473-3988 CELEBRATING THE SPECIAL OCCASIONS IN YOUR LIFE CELEBRATING THE SPECIAL OCCASIONS IN YOUR LIFE 760 Hyde Park Road, London | www.gordonsgold.ca | 519-473-3988 Page 14 Wortley Villager • December 2021 CamillaDER.indd 1 CELEBRATING THE SPECIAL OCCASIONS IN YOUR LIFE CELEBRATING THE SPECIAL OCCASIONS IN YOUR LIFE ‘Green’ with thanks to the City of London, Friends of the Civic Garden Complex, Baseline Nurseries, Parkway Gardens, Van Luyk’s, Sue Baker, Sherry Masse, Rikie Schieven, Ben Porchuk and Veronika Bauer and to Jessica Robertson for the design and her the entire family with planting. The Legend of Cramps MacGonigle The Legend of Cramps MacGonigle is the first book written by author and long-time Old South resident J. Bruce Parker. The quirky character in Bruce’s short story is based upon his 30 years of back-country camping and canoe tripping. The book is illustrated by Cynthia Walters and published by Moon Raven Publishing. Christmas in the Village and the Christmas Market back this year!” said Margaret. OSCOR Award to Gemmell Neilson OSCO recognized volun-

teer Gemmell Neilson for her coordination of volunteers for the Christmas Trees sales for a number of years. Gemmell also welcomes Vendors to the Gathering on the Green each year. She is also a volunteer for Museum London. A lover of rescue dogs and you will frequently see her walking dogs for neighbours. Thank you, Gemmell!

The author assures me that although published in 2021, copies are still available for $15 at Tuckey Hardware or directly from the author at hayjoe55@gmail.com. Bruce also suggests that the book makes a great Christmas gift for those who are inclined to camping or anyone who enjoys a good fireside story. All proceeds go to The Secret Handshake, a peer-to-peer support group in Toronto which assists those dealing with schizophrenia. Bruce is a frequent contributor to the Wortley Villager and the ongoing biographer of Canadian poet/painter bill bissett. “All they want for Christmas is You”

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Wortley Village

Holland America Cruise Line is history. Cruising the seas since the 19th century, now with 11 ships, 500 sailings per year, covering all 7 continents – comfort, exquisite dining, top notch service, variety of activities and interesting itineraries, make Holland America a cruise line to trust and enjoy life on the sea. Options? Why Cruise? Relax and enjoy lazy days on the sea; or take a port intensive cruise and explore history during the day returning to the sea at night; or take a combination cruise? Now, where? Pick a continent, any continent or make it easy and call Barb Chamberlain to guide you through your sea experience. Some may think of cruising, as sitting on a balcony basking in the sun – step out of the box and become an explorer, in the opposite direction – yes – Alaska! Holland America has been cruising Alaska for over 75 years! Glacier Bay National Park covers 3.3 million acres of rugged mountains, glaciers, temperate rainforest, wild coastlines and deep sheltered fjords, with the most permits for controlled visits to an outstanding natural wonderland than any other cruise line. This part of the world is so impressive that a team of park rangers and naturalists board the ship and take you through the ‘verbal’ importance of this part of Mother Nature before you begin the experience. If a green Mother Nature and archaeological / historical sites is your ‘cup of tea’, then head to the Mediterranean. Ogle at the stunning vista of the Amalfi Coast, with buildings clinging to a cliff amongst greenery. Perhaps tour the brick and stone life of Pompeii, still standing after excavation of almost 16 feet of ash from the eruption of Vesuvius which happened around the time of the construction of the Colosseum in Rome. Your choice, your cruise, the Holland America way.

Experience a Legend IN YOUR LIFETIME Venture above the Arctic Circle, below the equator, and beyond on board a 2025–2026 Holland America Legendary Voyage. Cross hemispheres and continents with the cruise line trusted for over 150 years.

London Food Coalition recognizes Jessica Robertson In honour of Women’s History Month in October, the London Food Coalition celebrated women who have been innovators and pioneers in the food prosperity movement including Wortley Village resident Jessica Robertson. Jessica has degrees in biology and outdoor experiential education from Queen’s University, a Master’s in city plan- ning from the University of Manitoba and a Permaculture Design Certificate. Founder of Wild Craft Permaculture, the Wortley Village resi- dent has been creating regenerative food systems since the early 2010s, and offers workshops from one-hour introductions to two-day intensives on subjects ranging from a broad intro- duction to permaculture, to specifics like foraging walks where participants learn to identify and use wild edibles. Jessica describes permaculture as a practical method of design that creates holistic self-supporting systems through an understanding of how natural systems work. “A forest takes care of itself. Nobody waters it, weeds it, or seeds it,” she explains. “A ‘food forest’ is an example of a permaculture technique that mimics the structure of a natural forest so that plants work together to support each other and the broader system with little outside assistance. But unlike a natural forest, a food forest provides large amounts of food for us.” Wild Craft Permaculture’s forte is garden and land development design work, providing consulting, design and installation services for small urban yards (see the May 2024 Wortley Villager for a local pollinator garden by Jessica) to large acreage farms. Learn more at www.wildcraftpermaculture.ca or by following Wild Craft Permaculture on Facebook. Hot Buttered Apples by Jessica Robertson Here is a seasonal recipe that is really good for boosting your immune system. If you can find foraged apples, that’s fantastic! Sometimes people with an apple tree on their property have more than they can manage so they are happy to share. They don’t always look as perfect as the ones from commercial growers but they are great for cooking with! 12 tart apples 1 cinnamon stick 1 tbsp cinnamon 8 whole cloves (or ~3/4 tsp ground) 1 tbsp turmeric powder 1 inch piece of fresh ginger root (or 1 1/4 tsp ground) Peel, core, and roughly chop apples. Place the apples in a pot with 2 cm of water at the base. Add the spices and dates. Bring to a boil, stir, and then lower the heat. Add butter and stir again. Cover pot and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes, stirring once. 1 tbsp butter 4 pitted dates

Arias and Ale – Opera Pub at Storm Stayed Brewery by J. Bruce Parker

As daylight dims much earlier this time of year and late autumn reveals a cold shoulder, we tend to retreat to indoor activities. Storm Stayed Brewery has been very accommodating with this notion with the 10th edition of ‘Opera Pub’, an ongoing event at their venue since 2018. Stephanie O’Leary and Paul Digout have been hosts throughout, gathering young vocal professionals to regale the very appreciative bar patrons with the arias of the grand operatic catalogue. The evening of November 12th was no different with excerpts from works by Mozart, Handel, Barber, Verdi, and Saint Saens. London’s craft breweries have tapped into their own social network for a variety of entertainment. There are pubs focusing on trivia nights, book clubs, local musicians, and a diversity of themed nights, but Storm Stayed Brewery has offered the music and beauty of opera to those who may have avoided or not yet experienced it. Co-owner of Storm Stayed, Justin Belanger tells me, “It’s not the regular venue for that kind of music. We want to be open and welcoming to a different demographic and certainly to those who love this music.” All the singers perform at a professional level, some still finishing their Masters or Doctorate in music and all in amazing voices. It is a free event and as Stephanie explains, “We are not paid. We do this to spread opera and its wonderful music through the community. Outside the University of Western Ontario, there are not many outlets for this music. It is an effort to make it accessible and fun”. And it is. No stage sets or plot lines to follow, and the casually- dressed singers ply their voices as beer is tapped and served. It is a comfortable and casual environment. Opera Pub will return to Storm Stayed Brewery early next year.

The class is free as a com- munity service but donations of goods or money for the London Food Bank are accepted. Dan has lived in Old South London for 40 years and raised his family here. “I can’t say enough about the benefits of yoga and what a game changer it has been for me and for just about everybody I know who practices,” he enthused in the September 2018 Wortley Villager. “I embraced the idea of giving away yoga while doing teacher training and have been doing free classes in the park ever since. It gives people a chance to try yoga. If they like the class, they might start a practice, and the more people practice yoga the better the world will become for them as individuals and we as a species. I truly believe that”. Follow Dan Woodward on Facebook for class updates and more. Stephen moved to London in 1983 from his hometown of Thunder Bay to study pipe organ and piano at Western University. After graduating, he decided to make London his home. “ We noticed the friendly neighbourhood atmosphere as soon as we moved here in 2006,” he said of Wortley Village in his March 2021 Wortley Villager profile. Stephen was a music teacher at A.B. Lucas Secondary School and became the musical director and organist at St. James Westminster Anglican Church in January 2001. He entertains Londoners too by collaborating often in many other local ensembles, including projects with son Adam Corrigan Holowitz of AlvegoRoot Theatre. hristmas Tree Sales – Tremblett’s – While they last

“Matt and his team are friendly, professional, ef fi cient and honest. I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my vehicles.” DM “Friendly and communicative staff, fair pricing and close to home. It’s nice when the local team is as exceptional as this one. Thank you! Kate.”

With the rst snow covered or icy road drive this fall, drivers are quickly reminded of the dangers of winter driving. All Season tires and Summer tires become rigid in cold temperatures whereas winter tires are made from a different rubber compound that stays pliable in the cold. Winter tires, when installed in a set of 4, improve braking and maneuverability on cold and icy road surfaces. Laws that require winter tires in Germany and Quebec quickly proved well founded; winter collision rates dropped noticeably in those areas. Winter tires are an additional upfront expense you may wish to avoid, but, the cost savings of driving on all season tires (especially older, worn ones) may be quickly offset by sliding into a curb (and damaging your car) or having a small "fender bender" accident on a slippery road surface. The most valuable facet of winter tires is that they keep you, your family, and other motorists safer in the winter. If you are in the market for winter tires stop in and see us, we have many different options for different budgets and will help you choose the right tires for your vehicle. Thank you for a wonderful year, to our faithful, kind customers, suppliers and our business neighbours. We hope you have a safe and happy holiday. We wish you a Happy New Year! Be safe, be kind. Your Wortley Auto Service Team Did you know that we will also install your existing winter, give us a call or hop onto our website to make an appointment today! Safe Driving
