Ward 11 Update from City Hall by Skylar Franke, Ward 11 London City Council 519-661-2489, extension 4011 • sfranke@london.ca Winter is here and I’m excited for when the Coves freeze over and the world is blanketed in snow. I always find winter more fun when I fill it with activities like tobogganing, skating and drinking hot chocolate while snuggled up with a book. This month, I’m looking forward to cozying up with tea and reading The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Speaking of recommendations, given the holiday season is upon us I thought I’d give you some quick gift ideas for that special someone. I love giving experiences, consumables, or secondhand gifts in efforts to keep our money local! • Take someone out to dinner (so many great restaurants to pick from!) • Check out one of the many holiday bazaars • Get tickets for a local theatre production or music performance • Go on a hike through the Coves • Bring a board game and have a drink at Storm Stayed Brewery • Catch a movie at the Hyland Cinema • Go for a walk and pick up a coffee from Locomotive or Sidetracks and a treat from the Baker’s Table bakery and try on some cute vintage at Filthy Rebena • Many local shops for cute gifts like birdseed from Feather- fields or a record from Grooves • Offer to help your parents out with a home project and pick up supplies at Tuckey’s • Buy a massage gift certificate TVDSB (Ward 11) Update by Trustees Pizzolato and Polhill (Wards 1, 11, 12, 14) Hello, TVDSB families and community members! As your trustees, we are here to share updates on what’s happening in our schools this December. Celebrating Inclusivity and Awareness December brings special days that highlight inclusion, empathy, and action: • December 3: International Day of Persons with Disabilities , which promotes rights and well-being for all. • December 6: National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women , honouring the lives lost at Polytechnique Montréal and addressing gender-based violence. • December 10 : International Human Rights Day , reminding us of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and our shared responsibility to uphold it. During Local Government Week, we visited Grade 5 and Grade 10 civics classes to talk about the role of trustees. It was a great opportunity to hear directly from students about what they see as the biggest needs in schools today—many spoke about the importance of mental health support and resources for inclusive learning environments. We’d like to recognize the Thames Valley Education Foundation (TVEF) for its important work in fundraising to support students and families in need through the Caring Fund. By providing timely assistance, the foundation truly helps families facing challenging situations.
If you have questions or concerns, your child’s teacher is the first contact, followed by the principal, superintendent, and, us, your trustees. For contact information, visit tvdsb.ca and click “Contact Us.” We have an upcoming board meeting on December 10 at 7 pm. These meetings are open to the public, and we welcome your participation. As we wrap up the year, we want to extend our best wishes for a joyful and restful holiday season to all our families, students, and staff. Whether you’re celebrating or simply taking some time to relax, we hope you enjoy a season filled with happiness, connection, and good health. We look forward to welcoming students back on January 6 with renewed energy for a fantastic year ahead! Thank you for your ongoing support, and please feel free to reach out with any questions. We are here to support our students, families, and communities as we look ahead to a bright new year! And of course, I love checking out Christmas in the Village – it feels like Whoville around here in December! Cold season is upon us Don’t forget to get your flu & COVID-19 shots to stay healthy over the holidays. Hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and Merry Christmas!! Skylar
