Wortley Villager December 2024

London Food Coalition recognizes Jessica Robertson In honour of Women’s History Month in October, the London Food Coalition celebrated women who have been innovators and pioneers in the food prosperity movement including Wortley Village resident Jessica Robertson. Jessica has degrees in biology and outdoor experiential education from Queen’s University, a Master’s in city plan- ning from the University of Manitoba and a Permaculture Design Certificate. Founder of Wild Craft Permaculture, the Wortley Village resi- dent has been creating regenerative food systems since the early 2010s, and offers workshops from one-hour introductions to two-day intensives on subjects ranging from a broad intro- duction to permaculture, to specifics like foraging walks where participants learn to identify and use wild edibles. Jessica describes permaculture as a practical method of design that creates holistic self-supporting systems through an understanding of how natural systems work. “A forest takes care of itself. Nobody waters it, weeds it, or seeds it,” she explains. “A ‘food forest’ is an example of a permaculture technique that mimics the structure of a natural forest so that plants work together to support each other and the broader system with little outside assistance. But unlike a natural forest, a food forest provides large amounts of food for us.” Wild Craft Permaculture’s forte is garden and land development design work, providing consulting, design and installation services for small urban yards (see the May 2024 Wortley Villager for a local pollinator garden by Jessica) to large acreage farms.
