A Message from Carin Currier, Projects and Communications Manager
Dear AMA Members and Friends, Carin here, your Projects and Communications Manager, stepping in for Deantha this month. As I write my first column for the AMA Journal, I want to share some exciting developments and insights from our communications front. Effective communication is the backbone of our Association. Over the past few months, we’ve been working diligently to streamline our communication channels to ensure timely and relevant information reaches you. I hope you all have had a chance to read my weekly emailed AMA staff report, Rock Talk . It covers everything from national mining news and Alaska’s current events to upcoming key dates to know. It’s been a blast gathering news and stories to share with our wonderful members. If you have an event or story you would like highlighted, please don’t hesitate to reach out. For the last year, AMA has been actively trying to ramp up our social media efforts. It’s important to share mining news, but we’re really focused on highlighting member achievements, sharing more from the field and keeping our finger on the pulse of legislative happenings. It’s been rewarding to see more interaction and engagement from folks across the state and beyond. If you haven’t already, find us on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, and give us a follow! Of course, not all updates are easy to share but the outlook for Alaska mining is strong. With record-high gold prices and an uptick in production forecasts, added to a favorable look at reasonable mining policy, we’re on track for what could be an amazing year not only for the mining industry, but especially Alaska. It’s a testament to the grit, innovation and resilience that defines our industry. On a more personal note, when I joined AMA, I didn’t come from a mining background. I had a lot to learn, and quickly. I discovered almost immediately that this industry is full of some of the most passionate, hardworking and innovative people I’ve ever met. The technical side of mining is impressive, no doubt, but it’s the people who make it truly remarkable. Whether it’s longtime operators
who have dedicated their lives to responsible resource development or the next generation stepping into the industry with fresh energy, the sense of pride and community is unmistakable. It didn’t take long for me to feel at home. I am just very thankful. As we navigate the evolving landscape of mineral development, our focus remains on fostering transparent communication, advocating for our industry’s interests and celebrating our collective successes. Your feedback is invaluable, so don’t hesitate to share your thoughts and suggestions with me. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to Alaska’s mining community.
Warm regards, Carin, Projects and Communications Manager

AMA Celebrates Alaska Mining Day!
AMA’s statewide Zoom call May 9 featured a record number of attendees with 130 participants logging on to hear from DNR Commissioner John Boyle on mining issues and updates, and to present the Alaska Mining Day proclamation signed by Gov. Mike Dunleavy. It was a blast to celebrate Alaska Mining Day (May 10) a day early and to have so many smiling faces online. Thank you for helping us celebrate our industry and all that each of you do for us at AMA!

I am an equipment operator. I am the next generation. I am mining.
At 24 years old, I’m already an equipment operator for Kinross Alaska. I drive mine trucks and have trained on more advanced equipment, such as bulldozers and graders. I just started working with our dispatch team, as well. Not only has mining allowed me to earn great pay right out of school, but I don’t have any student loans or debt. I would encourage anyone entering the workforce to consider a career in mining.

Coeur Alaska Gives $20,000 to New Endowment Fund for Juneau Students
RUNNING ALASKA’S REMOTE CAMPS SINCE 1974
The Juneau Community Foundation is pleased to announce that Coeur Alaska, owner and operator of the Kensington Mine, together with its employees, contributed $20,000 to support the new Coeur Alaska Kensington Mine Juneau Schools Endowment. Created in late 2024 by Coeur Alaska, the endowment provides a sustainable funding source to support extracurricular activities for Juneau’s K-12 students. A member of the Juneau community since 1987, Coeur Alaska has been a steadfast supporter of educational and youth activities in Southeast Alaska. The new endowment fund allows Coeur Alaska to continue its financial support for Juneau’s students, even beyond its life of mine. Proceeds from the fund go directly to the Juneau School District. The contribution was the result of a silent auction fundraiser for Coeur Alaska employees. Auction items were generously donated by Coeur Alaska, its employees, and contractor partners — and bid on by Coeur Alaska employees. Employee- donated items showcased the skills and talents of Coeur Alaska employees and included several custom woodworking pieces, handmade beaded earrings, a custom metal wall sign, a high-end fly rod, and more. “Coeur Alaska, its employees, and our community business partners all care deeply about supporting Juneau’s next generation,” said Steve Ball, General Manager of the Kensington Mine. “This contribution will help grow our new endowment, supporting Juneau’s K-12 students today and for many years to come.” The Juneau Community Foundation would like to extend a special thanks to Coeur Alaska, its employees, and the following companies for supporting this donation: AGGPRO, Alaska Aggregate Products, Alaska Seaplanes, Alaska Marine Lines, Coastal Helicopters, Dawson Construction, Goldbelt, Inc., Jennmar, Northwest Mine Supply, Sandvik, Thyssen Mining, Inc., and Timberline Drilling. “We applaud Coeur Alaska for continuing to build this wonderful endowed fund that provides support for student activities today and will continue to do so tomorrow,” said Amy Skilbred, Executive Director, of Juneau Community Foundation.
From exploration to production, we have decades of experience serving the mining industry in all stages of operations. Streamline your camp services with NMS, an Alaska Native-owned company.
Deantha attended the Alaska Trucking Association’s annual meeting in April and took part in a panel discussion on Alaska’s natural resources and opportunities. Also on the panel were Kara Moriarty, Alicia Amberg, Jamie Benson, Leila Kimbrell and Kati Capozzi.

Alaska Mining Hall of Fame Foundation Inducts Gordon and Marilyn Herreid
AMA President Lorali Simon Represents Alaska in Washington, D.C.
The Alaska Mining Hall of Fame inducted Gordon and Marilyn Herreid on April 19. Gordon was born in Santa Maria, Calif., on Oct. 24, 1924, to Walter B. Herreid and Florence Weed, both from families of Norwegian immigrants who immigrated to the United States. Gordon’s father Walter played collegiate football at Washington State University; his team improbably beat Brown University at the first Rose Bowl game in Pasadena, Calif., in 1916. Walter would later coach football for Dan Diego State University in the 1930s before passing unexpectedly from an infection in 1941 when Gordon was 17 years old. Gordon served in WWII in the 10th Mountain Division in Italy and was severely wounded in combat. Upon his discharge from the military in 1946, he traveled to Alaska for both adventure and education at the University of Alaska, where he graduated with a Geology degree in 1949. Marilyn was born Marilyn Hahn in St. Chales, Ill., on April 19, 1928, to Jennie and Walter Hahn. She remembered an idyllic childhood
Gordon’s world of ideas, his simple lifestyle, and his love for the great outdoors. Marilyn graduated from the University of Alaska with a ‘Pre- Med’ degree in 1950, the only one awarded by the institution at that time. During the 1950s, Gordon worked as a consulting economic geologist in both Canada and Alaska, and in 1958, was appointed chief geologist of the Red Devil mercury-antimony mine in southwest Alaska. In 1961, Gordon became Alaska’s first state geologist, who designed and implemented programs to acquire knowledge about the geologic framework and mineral resource endowment of the 49th State. Marilyn was always there to help carry out the strenuous chores related to geological field work that included evaluations in more than a dozen remote locales in the 49th State. Whereas Gordon was a creative man full of ideas, Marilyn insured that those ideas bore fruit. Marilyn and Gordon were inseparable, and his successes in life had a lot to do with her often-stern guidance. — Compiled by Tom Bundtzen
where music, friends, and academies were her passions. Marilyn studied pre-med at Grinnell College in Iowa with the intention of becoming a pediatrician. In 1947, after two years at Grinnell, Marilyn transferred to the University of Alaska in search of adventure. This she found, especially in the person of Gordon. Marilyn was greatly inspired by and embraced
Lorali Simon, Vice President of External Affairs at Usibelli Coal Mine and AMA President, was invited to the White House in April for President Donald Trump’s announcement of executive actions aimed at protecting and growing America’s coal industry. Alaska’s Mining Future Remains Golden
second-largest gold-producing mine in Alaska, is poised for a breakout year. Since acquiring the Pogo mine toward the end of 2018, Australia-based Northern Star has steadily upgraded operations and expanded the mill at Pogo. Last year, this underground mine about 85 miles southeast of Fairbanks produced 279,427 oz of gold, roughly 10% higher than the 254,492 oz produced in 2023. With continued improvements on both the mining and processing sides of the operation, Northern Star expects Pogo gold production to top 300,000 oz this year – an improvement that will help push total Alaska production above the 1-million-oz mark. Production is also trending higher at the third-largest gold-producing operation in the 49th State – Coeur Mining Inc.’s Kensington mine in Southeast Alaska. Thanks to a steady rise in production throughout the year, Kensington produced 95,671 oz of gold last year, a 13% rise over 2023. With gold output increasing steadily every quarter of 2024, from 21,183 oz during the first quarter to 25,839 oz during the final three months, Coeur’s Southeast Alaska mine is on pace to top 100,000 oz of gold in 2025. While Hecla Mining Company’s Greens Creek mine is best known for the roughly 9 million oz of silver it produces each year, the Southeast Alaska operation also
recovers significant gold, zinc, and lead byproducts. During 2024, Greens Creek produced 55,275 oz of gold, which is about 10% less than in 2023 but close to the average for this silver mine that typically produces between 48,000 and 60,000 oz per year. Sundance Mining Group’s Dawson mine in Southeast Alaska adds about 12,500 oz of gold to Alaska’s annual production total. While Dawson is the smallest of the hardrock gold mines, its steady output could make the difference whether 2025 Alaska gold production pushes above the 1-million-oz threshold. Alaska’s more than 200 placer gold mining operations will also help push the state’s gold production total higher, as owners of these mostly family-run operations are eager to begin pushing pay dirt through wash-plants to recover $3,000/oz-plus gold. As momentous as breaking above 1 million oz would be, the Donlin Gold project has the potential to single- handedly accomplish this feat – more than doubling Alaska’s current gold production. This 39-million-oz gold mine project in the Yukon- Kuskokwim region of Southwest Alaska has been on the cusp of development for more than a decade but has been delayed by optimization studies and permitting challenges. — North of 60 Mining News
around $6 billion this year, even with a 20% drop in the production of zinc, the second largest contributor to the state’s mining sector, expected at the Red Dog mine. While breaking above the 1-million-oz-per-year gold production threshold is a momentous milestone for Alaska, output of the precious metal is expected to continue climbing and could break above 2 million oz if the new Donlin Gold owners push that world-class mine project across the finish line. “With 39 million ounces of gold at double the industry average grade, and an optimal location in the prime jurisdiction of Alaska – already the second largest gold- producing state in the United States – we believe that the project could create value for decades to come,” said John Paulson, a hedge fund billionaire that recently bought most of Barrick’s 50% interest in the world-class gold project. With operational improvements at some of Alaska’s other big gold producers and rocketing prices attracting new placer miners, Fort Knox is not the only operation expected to push Alaska’s gold production higher. Northern Star Resources Ltd. believes Pogo, the
With gold shattering the $3,000-per-ounce ceiling without hesitation and Alaska mines poised to break above the 1-million-oz mark this year, the future of Alaska’s mining sector is golden. This combination of record gold prices and production positions Alaska’s mining industry to crush all previous records this year when it comes to the value of the minerals and metals produced in the state. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) calculates that Alaska’s mining operations produced $4.7 billion of non- fuel minerals – gold, zinc, silver, lead, and aggregate products – in 2024. Adding the coal produced for in- state power plants bumps this total up to roughly $4.8 billion. The roughly 959,000 oz of gold produced at six hardrock and more than 200 placer mines contributed $2.3 billion, or nearly half, of Alaska’s mineral production value during 2024. With gold prices more than 40% higher than they were at this time last year and production on the rise, more than $3.4 billion of this precious metal could be recovered from Alaska mines this year. This would push Alaska’s mineral production value up to
