SURVIVOR PRESENTATIONS

At the Holocaust Survivor Memoirs Program, we are fortunate to work with survivors who are passionate about Holocaust education. Students may have the opportunity to participate in a survivor presentation after completing a preliminary study of the survivor’s story. In the classroom, students will compile questions that directly relate to the story or the survivor. A member of our

education team facilitates the presentations, in which students will engage in a meaningful dialogue with the survivor in a question- answer style activity. This style of presentation provides an oppor- tunity for deeper learning, empathy building and establishing a human connection to the history students are learning.

The Azrieli Foundation’s Holocaust Survivor Memoirs Program has such a wide range of memoirs, written by survivors from different backgrounds and experiences, that you are sure to find one suitable for your classroom. But most enriching for students are the survivor speakers themselves. With some of the memoirs, you can read the text and then have the author come in and speak to your students. Having Pinchas Gutter spend time with my students was an experience none of us will soon forget. He’s such an amazing person, and having him sitting in our classroom brought an immediacy to my students’ learning that I could never have offered on my own.
