BRAUNSLAW.COM 404-418-8244 Steel Drums for the Soul
THE RHYTHMS THAT REVIVE OUR LIVES Are you having an overwhelming day? Try listening to steel drums.
Music is also one of the things I use to get myself moving in the mornings. These days, I love listening to electronic dance music (EDM). Although I’ve never had a musical bone in my body in terms of playing an instrument, I probably would have ended up being a DJ if I somehow decided to get into the music industry. I’ve always been more about the beat than the lyrics and vocals — probably due to listening to all my parents’ great Motown 8-tracks when I was a kid — and EDM’s tempo and bass drops really do it for me. I’m usually here between 6:30 and 7 a.m., and it doesn’t take long before the bass is thumping. Naturally, I turn it down by the time the other people who work in this building arrive by 9, but it’s all about the bass until then. Of course, June also marks the official start of summer — and a great opportunity to enjoy music while experiencing life outdoors. I’ll be doing plenty of the latter once the pollen dies down, including taking a trip down to the coast of Florida. I’ll likely try to take things a little easier than usual this summer, as I’m still recovering from the hip surgery I’ve mentioned in recent newsletters and am having some trouble getting upstairs and generally moving around. If things aren’t better by the end of summer, I’ll start thinking about hip replacement surgery. No matter where that issue goes, I’ll inevitably have plenty of great tunes to listen to as I recuperate.
When I was a teenager growing up in Ocean City, Maryland, I spent a lot of my summers surfing the waves off the coast. One of the best breaks around was in front of a restaurant/bar called The Ocean Club. On the weekends, I’d sit out waiting for the swells and listen to the live steel-drum reggae from the club. If you’ve never heard this style of music before, I can’t recommend it enough. It impacted me immediately, and it remains one of my favorite genres. After my introduction to reggae on the beach, I soon fell in love with the music of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Israel Vibration, and similar artists. I also started attending reggae festivals as often as possible, and I’ve been fortunate to visit the Caribbean as well. Hearing that music will always put me at ease and take all the stress out of my world. So, what does listening to chill music on the beach in my youth have to do with personal injury law? Well, I firmly believe that few things bring people peace — regardless of their profession or life circumstances — more than music. With June 21 being World Music Day, I wanted to remind readers that you can reduce so many of life’s stressors through a great song (or 20)! It doesn’t matter what styles you enjoy; the right music for you will help you relax, feel better about things, and put a smile on your face.
Whether you’re into bass-heavy sounds or a more soothing soundtrack, I hope you celebrate World Music Day — and every day — by playing whatever makes you happy. And if you have a great reggae artist or another musical act you think I’d like, I’d love to know about them and give them a spin. After all, what’s the point of having a full surround-sound system in this office if I don’t put it to good use? That said, I promise anyone within hearing distance in this building that I won’t blast them with bass during business hours. “It doesn’t matter what styles you enjoy; the right music for you will help you relax, feel better about things, and put a smile on your face.”

GET IN THE GAME
Stand-Up Paddleboarding This sport originated among Hawaiian surfers and began gaining momentum nationwide about a decade ago. Participants stand upright on a flat, buoyant board and propel themselves over lakes, rivers, and oceans with a single paddle. Paddleboards are bigger than surfboards and are stable enough to hold a picnic in a waterproof bag! Snorkeling Snorkeling is a great family activity for all ages if you’re vacationing near an ocean. Flippers, watertight goggles, and snorkels are easy to rent or buy. Exploring the wonders beneath the waves is as easy as floating on the surface and paddling your flippers. While any clear ocean waters can be fun to explore, consider trekking to Hawaii or Cozumel to see spectacular schools of
or kayak. These watercraft are usually available to rent near lakes and rivers, and, barring rough weather, navigating with them is relatively safe and easy. Pack a picnic, explore, and see what you can find along a river or lakeshore. Waterskiing While this sport requires access to a speedboat and a skilled operator, arranging to try it can offer unforgettable thrills. Nothing can compare to the exhilaration as you first rise above the waves and stand on your skis; participants also get a full-body workout! Waterskiing poses a challenge for beginners when crossing the wake and keeping their legs beneath them, but the rewards are worth the effort! This summer, consider vacationing near a body of water to explore these aquatic activities or others, such as sailing or bodyboarding. You will create lasting memories and may ignite passions your kids will enjoy for years!
Few outdoor activities are more fun to do as a family than beating the heat in the water. A facility as simple as a community pool can offer fun for all ages, including wading, diving, and lap swimming. As summer gets underway, consider making plans to try more complex aquatic sports as a family. Here are four exciting options that will inspire the whole family to take the plunge. MARLEY’S MAGIC Recommended Reggae Listening
‘Legend: The Best of Bob Marley and the Wailers’ Not surprisingly, this 1984 compilation of greatest hits is not only Marley’s most popular release but also the bestselling reggae album of all time. The album’s 14 tracks offer an impressive overview of Marley’s musical output from 1973 to 1983 and feature such classics as “Buffalo Soldier,” “No Woman, No Cry,” and “Redemption Song.” If you’ve yet to experience the magic of Marley, “Legend” is an excellent place to start. ‘The Wailers: Burnin’ ’ If you’re looking for an official studio album representing Marley’s strengths as a performer, look no further than 1973’s extraordinary “Burnin’.” Released under the Wailers’ name and featuring the equally legendary Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, the 10-track collection features two of Marley’s most definitive tunes: “I Shot the Sheriff” (later covered by Eric Clapton) and “Get Up, Stand Up.” Fifty-two years after its release, “Burnin’” remains a reggae classic everyone should listen to at least once. Take a Break
As I mentioned in this month’s cover article, I love reggae — and there’s no bigger reggae star than the late Bob Marley. If you’re new to Bob’s vast musical output, here are three releases that serve as a perfect introduction. I guarantee that listening to Bob and his legendary band, The Wailers, will take you on a musical journey like no other, one that will surely put you in a peaceful, happy mood. Enjoy! ‘Bob Marley and the Wailers: Live at the Roxy’ The mark of any true music artist is the ability to perform at a small club with the same energy they’d bring to an arena show. In May 1976, Bob Marley and the Wailers walked on stage at the Roxy in Los Angeles — a club with a modest capacity of only 500 — and delivered one of the most incredible live performances ever. It’s impossible not to feel happy while listening to this concert and taking in the feel-good nature of Marley and his cohorts in their prime.

Calories Calories tell you how much energy you get from one serving. The trick is to balance what you eat with what your body burns. If you want to maintain or lose weight, keeping an eye on calorie intake is key. Want to know how many calories you should be consuming based on your age, height, and weight? Visit MyPlate.gov/myplate-plan to find out! Percent of Daily Value The Percent of Daily Value (% DV) helps you quickly determine whether a food is nutrient-rich or lacking. Want more fiber? Look for a high % DV. Trying to cut back on sodium? Choose products with a low % DV. What to Cut Back On Some nutrients are better in small doses. Keep an eye on saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars, as too much can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, and other health concerns. If the % DV is 20% or more, that’s high; if it’s 5% or less, that’s low — so aim low for these! What to Load Up On Not all nutrients are harmful — some are essential for good health! The average diet often lacks fiber, vitamin D, calcium, iron, and potassium. These powerhouses support everything from strong bones to better digestion and heart health. The higher the % DV, the better! With these tips, you’ll never look at a nutrition label the same way again. Empower yourself with knowledge, make smarter choices, and enjoy a healthier, more balanced diet!
Decode the Label Learn to Read Nutrition Facts Like a Pro
Reading a nutrition label might seem like deciphering a secret code, but once you know what to look for, it’s a game-changer for healthier food choices. Let’s break it down so you can shop like a pro and fuel your body with the nutrients it needs. Serving Size Before diving into the details, start with the serving size. This tells you how much of the product the nutrition facts apply to. For example, if a bag of chips says 150 calories per serving but contains three servings, eating the whole bag means you consume 450 calories.
