As we embark on a new year, I find myself reflecting on the sources of inspiration that have guided me in my career as a personal injury attorney and in my life. Inspiration, I believe, often finds its roots in our earliest dreams and aspirations. As a child, long before the age of smartphones and the internet, I found myself captivated by a technology that was, at the time, the marvel of the day: airplanes. Since my father viewed the day’s new technology, television, with a hint of suspicion, I immersed myself in books about airplanes and jets. My imagination soared as I envisioned myself in the cockpit, streaking through the heavens. The dream of being a test pilot seemed like the ultimate adventure. I fondly recall the days when Marathon gas stations issued commemorative glass mugs for each Apollo space launch. These mementos were more than collectibles; they were tangible connections to a world that enthralled me — a world of flight and space exploration. Fast forward 30 years from those childhood fantasies, I had the privilege of meeting a true hero who embodied the virtues of wisdom, courage, and kindness — astronaut John Glenn. At an event at the airport, I listened, captivated, as he shared his experiences. Afterward, in a brief but memorable conversation, his mannerisms and words left a profound impact on me. In John Glenn, I saw a person who had not only explored the vastness of space but had also dedicated his life to serving others with integrity and bravery. This encounter reminded me that while my childhood dream of becoming a pilot did not materialize, the fascination and inspiration it sparked have stayed with me. It has fueled my pursuit of excellence in my chosen field of law, reminding me that the essence of our childhood heroes can be channeled into our adult lives in meaningful ways. SOARING HIGH DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM OUR HEROES

John, Hillary, and Aaron with Senator John Glenn in 1992 at the Mansfield Lahm Airport

As we step into this new year, I encourage each of us to reflect on those who have inspired us. They need not be famous astronauts or public figures. Inspiration can come from myriad sources — family members, teachers, historical figures, or even characters from our favorite books. What matters is the impact they have on us, urging us to strive for excellence, to be courageous in the face of challenges, and to approach our work and lives with kindness and integrity. Let us all find that spark of inspiration that propels us to live our best lives, to soar high in our endeavors, and to make a positive impact on the world around us. Just as the vast skies once called to a young dreamer, let our aspirations guide us in this journey of a new year.

THE POWER OF POSITIVE HABITS

Practical Tips for Incorporating Positive Habits Start Small Begin by identifying one or two small habits you’d like to develop. Whether it’s waking up 15 minutes earlier, taking short breaks to stretch during work, or practicing gratitude, small changes can lead to significant improvements.

Celebrate Progress Acknowledge and celebrate the progress you make. Recognize that forming positive habits is a journey, not a sprint. Small victories build momentum and reinforce your commitment to change. Seek Accountability Share your goals with a friend, family member, or colleague who can provide support and encouragement. Having someone to share your journey with can make the process more enjoyable and increase your chances of success. Reflect Regularly Take time to reflect on your habits. Evaluate what is working well and where adjustments might be needed on a regular basis. Adaptation is a natural part of the habit-forming process. In the quest for personal and professional success, positive habits emerge as powerful catalysts for change. By embracing a deliberate approach to habit formation and incorporating practical strategies into our daily lives, we pave the way for a brighter and more fulfilling future. As we navigate the possibilities of the coming year, let positive habits be the compass guiding us toward success and well-being.

As we step into a new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the role of habits in shaping our personal and professional lives. The adage “We are what we repeatedly do” underscores the profound impact that habits can have on our success and well-being. Cultivating positive habits is not just a resolution; it’s a commitment to a better, more fulfilling life. The Influence of Habits on Success Our habits, whether big or small, play a significant role in determining the trajectory of our lives. From the moment we wake up to the time we go to bed, our routines shape our days. Positive habits contribute to increased productivity, enhanced well-being, and a sense of accomplishment. Professional Success Through Positive Habits In the professional realm, positive habits can be transformative. Whether it’s consistently meeting deadlines, practicing effective communication, or maintaining a healthy work-life balance, these habits contribute to a more successful and satisfying career. Success is not solely about grand achievements, but often the result of small, positive actions repeated consistently over time.

Create a Routine Establishing a routine helps embed positive habits into your daily life. Consistency is key, so try to perform your chosen habits at the same time

every day. This creates a sense of structure and makes it easier for the habits to become ingrained in your routine. Use Reminders Set reminders on your phone or write down your habits in a visible place. These visual cues serve as gentle nudges, helping you stay on track when life gets busy. There are many apps that can help you with your positive habit goals!

WHO INSPIRES US AND WHY Hillary, Attorney : Even though they are no longer with us, I continue to be inspired by my grandma Gertrude and great-aunt Sylvia. They immigrated from Poland to the United States when they were 8 and 6. After a treacherous journey across the ocean, they faced the daunting attorney instilled in me an early aspiration for a career in law. Reflecting back, I now realize how closely my life has mirrored Elle’s journey. Like Elle, I embraced my love for fashion and sorority life in college, and later pursued the demanding

Hannah, Litigation Assistant: The biggest inspiration in my teenage years was my social studies teacher. He was also the teacher for my psychology, sociology, and AP history courses, as well as head of an impromptu book club where he introduced me to classics such as Orwell’s “1984” and Huxley’s “Brave New World.” He always pushed us to broaden our horizons, and my favorite assignment from him involved visiting a Buddhist temple for the first time. He greatly influenced my decision to pursue a BA in sociology, and I will forever credit him for sparking my sociological imagination. Stephanie, Case Manager : My mother is my unwavering source of inspiration and guiding light in my life. Her commitment to service within the church demonstrates her unwavering compassion. Always putting others before herself, she possesses an extraordinary willingness to go to great lengths for anyone in need. Her acts of kindness extend beyond words, as she sacrifices her time, energy, and even personal funds to make a positive impact on the lives of those around her. Watching her selfless dedication has instilled in me a profound sense of empathy and a deep-rooted belief in the power of giving. My mother’s example is a testament to the transformative influence one person can have through acts of love and service, and I am endlessly grateful for the inspiration she brings to my life.

but rewarding path as a trial attorney. I even share her love for dogs with two pups of my own. Elle continues to be a source of inspiration for me — her story is a powerful reminder of the strength of dedication, hard work, and the essence of “girl power.” Beth, Subrogation Specialist : I am inspired by the senior citizens I see working out at my gym. They are taking care of their bodies and minds by spending time at the gym and socializing with their friends as they work out. Many gather in the café after working out and have lunch together. The gym is not only a place to exercise, but a place of friendship and well-being. Avery, Litigation Assistant: A great source of inspiration in my life was a teacher I had throughout high school. Known to us as Coach Shoulders, he was someone who shaped the way I approach life. I admired his positivity and the way he was respected by so, so many. He was the perfect example of what it meant to live by the golden rule. Whether you needed someone to laugh with or talk to, you could come to him. Coach inspired me to stand up for what I believe, spread kindness, and not take life too seriously.

challenge of starting school unable to speak English. Undeterred, both sisters demonstrated exceptional resilience and determination. Their hard work and perseverance were evident as they not only adapted to a new language and culture but excelled in their academic pursuits. Remarkably, my great-aunt Sylvia graduated second in her high school class, a testament to the enduring strength instilled in them by their transformative immigrant experience! Melanie, Attorney : Almost anyone who knows me (and anybody who sees my license plate!) is aware of my fondness for Mr. Fred Rogers, but I didn’t appreciate what an inspiration he was in my life until I became a parent. The way he modeled understanding, empathy, compassion, and respect is something I aspire to emulate in my interactions not just with children but also with anyone I encounter in my professional or personal life. Rachel, Attorney : Watching Elle Woods in “Legally Blonde” as a young girl left an indelible impression on me. Elle’s transformation from a fashion-savvy sorority girl to a tenacious trial

Panko-Crusted Salmon

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 425 F. 2. In a small bowl, mix together the panko, parsley, lemon zest, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp pepper. Drizzle with the olive oil and stir until the crumbs are evenly coated. Set aside. 3. Place the salmon fillets, skin side down, on a cutting board. Generously brush the top of the fillets with mustard and then sprinkle generously with salt and pepper. Press the panko mixture thickly on top of the mustard on each salmon fillet. The mustard will help the panko adhere. 4. In a 12-inch cast-iron skillet or large ovenproof pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. When the oil is very hot, add the salmon fillets, skin side down, and sear for 3–4 minutes, without turning, to brown the skin. 5. Transfer the pan to the hot oven and bake for 5–7 minutes until the salmon is almost cooked through and the panko is browned. Remove from the oven, cover with aluminum foil, and allow to rest for 5–10 minutes. Serve the salmon hot or at room temperature with lemon wedges.

After the indulgence of the holiday season, it’s time for some healthy eating. This simple recipe is satisfying and delicious but also low-calorie. Serve with oven-roasted potatoes and steamed broccoli. INGREDIENTS • 2/3 cup panko (Japanese dried breadcrumbs) • 2 tbsp minced fresh parsley

• 2 tbsp good olive oil • 4 (6–8 oz) salmon fillets, skin on • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard

Panko-Crusted Salmon 4 Unique New Year’s Traditions Around The World

How Different Cultures Celebrate the New Year BEYOND THE BALL DROP

Denmark: Breaking Plates The Danish have a unique way of showing affection to their friends

The New Year is a time for celebration, reflection, and new beginnings. While many of us are familiar with the ball drop in Times Square or the clinking of champagne glasses at midnight, exploring how different countries and cultures ring in the New Year is fascinating. Let’s journey outside the United States to discover a few unique New Year’s traditions from around the world. Spain: Eating 12 Grapes at Midnight As the clock strikes midnight in Spain, people eat 12 grapes — one for each clock chime. This tradition brings good luck and prosperity for the coming year. The grapes are usually eaten in public squares and plazas where crowds gather to celebrate. It’s a race against time to eat all 12 grapes before the last chime, as failing can bring in bad luck. Japan: Joya-no-Kane (Bell Ringing) The Japanese celebrate Joya-no-Kane, where temple bells ring 108 times: 107 times on Dec. 31, and then the 108th ring at midnight on the New Year, bridging the old and new year. This practice is rooted in Buddhist beliefs and is thought to cleanse the 108 worldly desires that cause human suffering.

and family. On New Year’s Eve, it’s customary to break plates and dishes against the doors of loved ones. The more broken pieces you find at your doorstep, the more popular and loved you are. Brazil: Offerings to Iemanjá In Brazil, particularly in coastal cities like Rio de Janeiro, people make offerings to Iemanjá, the goddess of the sea, on New Year’s Eve. They gather at the beach dressed in white and send small boats filled with flowers, candles, and gifts into the ocean as offerings. Scotland: First-Footing In Scotland, the first person to enter a home after midnight is called the “first-footer” and will bring good luck for the year. Traditionally, the first-footer should be a tall, dark-haired male who brings gifts like coal, bread, and whisky to symbolize warmth, luck, and good cheer.
