AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE
Showing Appreciation This Christmas Season
This time of year is magical and full of gratitude, cheer, laughter, and quality time. From holiday parties and get- togethers to lavish dinners and tasty desserts, the Christmas season is my favorite time of the year. However, it’s not only the decorations, treats, and celebrations that grab my attention — it’s the memories and reflecting on the past year and years prior and taking the time to appreciate all of those who have impacted my life and helped me get to where I am today. Christmas is all about being grateful for the many blessings in our lives and embracing those we love. In the name of the Christmas spirit, I’d like to shout out some of the most inspirational people in my life — those who have seen me at my worst, lifted me up, encouraged me, and also seen me at my best. I’m grateful to be blessed with a tribe of fabulous individuals whom I am CHRISTMAS IS ALL ABOUT BEING GRATEFUL FOR THE MANY BLESSINGS IN OUR LIVES AND EMBRACING THOSE WE LOVE.
lucky enough to call my family, friends, staff, and clients. In fact, grateful is an understatement — I’m elated. I’m thankful for my parents, especially my father who, at a young age, drilled into my mind that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. Throughout my life, I’ve never lost sight of this mentality, and I
who offer support and help us rise to new heights. I am so grateful to Dr. Tim Gengel who has believed in my vision and he was willing to buy into it during the worst time (2020 coronavirus). His willingness to invest into the business at the worst time gave us the capital to weather the storm and come out even stronger than before. I also want to thank Sarah for investing so much time and energy, in assisting me in transferring our systems and protocols to
continue to set goals for myself that allow me to accomplish
great things. My wife, Jennifer, has believed in me and supported me from the very beginning, and for her, I’m eternally grateful. Before going on a date with her, she insisted I do my homework and she
many practices throughout the years. She has recently decided to step down as regional manager to pursue her own dreams of owning her own company. She will be greatly missed and her long hours and sacrifices will never be forgotten.
pushed me — it’s because of her that my grades went from B’s and C’s to straight A’s! Without her, I’m positive I wouldn’t be where I am today. For my team here at Texas Sedation Dental & Implant Center that has stood by my side throughout the years and assisted in making the practice a success, I’m so thankful. Nobody is a self-made person — we are all assisted by those around us
This holiday season, for whom are you grateful? Take the time to reflect on your countless blessings and the many positive and inspirational folks in your life. From my family to you and yours, merry Christmas, happy holidays, and happy New Year! -Dr. Travis Kendall

INTUITIVE EATING: THE ANTI-DIET FOR THE HOLIDAYS WHAT IT IS AND HOW YOU CAN BENEFIT
If you’ve ever seen any “What I Eat in a Day” videos on TikTok or Instagram,
fullness, and satiety cues to help you decide what and how much to eat. No food is off the table.” This means you won’t catch an intuitive eater counting calories, talking about cheat days, or staring longingly at a doughnut they want but just can’t have. Instead, you might see them slowly savoring their food and pausing between bites to decide whether or not they’re full. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF EATING THIS WAY? Intuitive eating isn’t about weight loss, although some people who practice it do shed pounds. Instead, many articles point to other benefits like increased respect for your body, less stress and guilt around food, and even a better
understanding of your emotions. Ultimately, practitioners of this anti-diet claim to find more joy in eating than before. HOW CAN I LEARN MORE? Intuitive eating is based on 10 principles, including “honor your hunger” and “feel your fullness.” You can read about them at Health.ClevelandClinic.org/what-is- intuitive-eating or pick up a copy of the 1995 book that started it all: “Intuitive Eating” by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, two health professionals who specialize in nutrition and eating disorders. Intuitive eating is an “anti-diet” for every age and body type. It may be just the strategy you need to heal your relationships with food and get more joy out of the holiday season.
you’ve probably come across the hashtag #intuitiveeating. It pops up under posts ranging from snapshots of green smoothies to reels of influencers sprinkling cheese over giant bowls of pasta. If you’re not familiar with the term, you probably have a few big questions. WHAT IS INTUITIVE EATING, AND WHY IS IT CONSIDERED AN ‘ANTI-DIET’? At its core, intuitive eating is simply giving your body the food it needs in a mindful way. As psychologist Dr. Susan Albers explained in an interview with the Cleveland Clinic, “Intuitive eating is the polar opposite of dieting. Instead of following rules and restricting what you eat, you trust your internal hunger,

3 ROOT CANAL MYTHS DEBUNKED
Root canals: We’ve all heard of them, but do you really understand the procedure? Odds are you know someone who’s had one, but if you were to leave the office today being told you need a root canal, you’d turn to the internet for lots of research, especially if you are worried the procedure is painful. Here are three myths about root canals, because the more you know, the less frightening this tooth-saving procedure will seem! MYTH NO. 1: ROOT CANALS ARE PAINFUL. While the infection that leads to the need for a root canal is painful, the procedure itself is not! In fact, a root canal relieves the pain caused by the decay that made its way to your tooth’s root. Today, with the help of cutting-edge technology, sedation dentistry,
and anesthesia, a root canal will feel just like any other dental procedure, such as having a pesky cavity filled! MYTH NO. 2: IF YOU AREN’T IN PAIN, YOU DON’T NEED A ROOT CANAL. In some cases where the root of a tooth is infected, it may not cause pain. For example, if a tooth has died, you may not experience pain anymore. But to avoid infection, a root canal will be necessary. Don’t always associate pain with requiring a root canal! MYTH NO. 3: EXTRACTIONS ARE BETTER THAN ROOT CANALS. The goal of a root canal is to preserve your natural smile. Saving your tooth is the goal because a missing tooth or a gap in your smile can lead to further infection, shifting teeth, and misalignment. It can even
become difficult to chew and speak! While implants are always an option when the tooth cannot be saved, they mean more time in the chair!

If you are severely bleeding or in serious pain, we always recommend you call 911 or visit an emergency room right away! From there, once it is safe to do so, you can seek the necessary emergency dental care! EASE THE PAIN. To help reduce your pain from a damaged tooth or gums, apply hot or cold compresses to the affected area to alleviate any pain or swelling. For severe pain, take an over-the-counter medication. Rinse your mouth with water to prevent infection. CARE FOR THE INJURY. If your tooth was knocked out, it is important to keep the tooth moist at all times. If you’re able, place it back in the socket. If that is not an option, place it in between your cheek and gums or in milk.

Add carrots, cauliflower, garlic, and rosemary and stir until softened. 3. Pour tomatoes into mix and add water. Cover and let simmer for 10 minutes, then remove lid and cook for 15 minutes until thickened. Stir in peas and simmer. 4. Drain and mash potatoes. Stir in milk to desired consistency. 5. Preheat oven to 375 F. Spoon hot vegetable mix into pie dish, then top with mashed potatoes. Bake until top is golden brown.

With These Holiday Hosting Tips Christmas Gratitude This ‘Anti-Diet’ Could Save Christmas Debunking Common Root Canal Myths How to Handle a Dental Emergency Winter Vegetable Shepherd’s Pie How to Impress Visitors This Holiday Season IMPRESS THE GUESTS 3 4
The holidays are rapidly approaching, and soon, we’ll share laughs while enjoying the festivities with our loved ones. Before the celebrations begin, you must prepare your home for visitors, especially if they stay overnight. It can be stressful whether it’s your in-laws, best friends, or distant cousins coming to stay with you. You want to leave a good impression, but how do you ensure everyone’s needs are met, including yours? Here are three tips for setting yourself up for a successful holiday, regardless of who stays with you. STOCK UP ON YOUR GUESTS’ FAVORITES. Have you ever stayed with someone who didn’t have extra food for their guests? Don’t put your guests in this situation. Load up your pantry, refrigerator, and cupboards with your guests’ favorite foods and drinks. If you don’t know what they are, ask ahead of their
visit! Your guests will appreciate your conscientious gesture and have a much more enjoyable time if they can eat their favorites while visiting. PREPARE A GUEST ROOM. If your guests are staying with you, you need to prepare somewhere for them to sleep. Make sure you make up the bed, have plenty of pillows and blankets on hand, and provide adequate closet space for their clothes. Even if they aren’t staying in a traditional bedroom, their sleeping area should still be ready when they arrive. Clear off a table for them to use as a nightstand and put sheets on the couch or mattress where they’ll sleep. USE REAL DISHES. When we have company over for a meal, especially a large gathering, it’s usually easier
to use plastic or paper options — saves on cleanup, too! The holidays are not necessarily the time for this shortcut. Break out the fine china if you have it, or use regular dishes for your guests. It’s okay for the kids to have paper plates, but if you want to make a good impression on visiting adults, nicer dishes will dress up the table setting and meal.
