A Journey with Century City

08 The Century City Arts Foundation (CCAF), established in 2017 as a registered Public Benefit Organisation, was created to make Century City a vibrant hub for the arts. Its mission is to preserve, promote, and showcase artistic expression by offering facilities, opportunities, and platforms for both seasoned and emerging artists across various genres. The goal is to keep the trail dynamic and engaging, offering thought-provoking additions that encourage visitors to return time and again. Currently, the trail features 31 artworks, with the latest being Landscape of the Soul and the I love Century City mural. In addition, Anton Smit’s outdoor exhibition boasts 33 stunning sculptures spread throughout the precinct, further enriching the artistic landscape. Another key attraction is The Long March to Freedom, an independent art destination founded by Dali Tambo and managed by The National Heritage Project (NPO). This powerful exhibition features 102 life-sized bronze sculptures of South African heroes from the 1600s to the present, including the most recent additions, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Prof. Kader Asmal. Colossal Youth by Anton Smit

From monuments and statues honouring past heroes to historical moments immortalised in sculpture, participatory public art, and modern pieces celebrating contemporary artists. Art is everywhere. At Century City, we believe art breathes life into the bricks and mortar, giving the area a soul. The significance of art here is multifaceted, offering cultural, social, economic, and aesthetic benefits. It defines the character of the community and enhances the quality of life for residents, visitors, and workers alike. Art’s purpose is to inspire thought and offer a break from the routine, inviting contemplation of the world in new and personal ways. Each person experiences art uniquely, shaped by their own perspective, which makes every viewing distinct. Each piece is set against different backdrops, evolving as the light changes or as you view it from different angles. You might step out of a parking deck and unexpectedly find an Anton Smit sculpture nestled among the greenery, or discover a vibrant mural under a bridge. These works of art invite you to see the world with fresh eyes, sparking curiosity and delight in the unexpected.

When you travel the world, public art is an integral part of any city’s identity

The Century City Art Trail, which is free and open to the public, is constantly evolving with new exhibits and partnerships.
