Lung Cancer ^ In a recent special report to the Cali fornia Governor’s Council, State Direc tor of Public Health, Wilton L. Halver son, stated that while the California tu berculosis death rate is dropping, cancer of the lungs might soon be a greater killer than T.B. He also declared that the increase in deaths from cancer of the lungs and other parts of the respiratory tract may be caused by heavy smoking. The Cali fornia Assembly approved a bill appro priating $150,000.00 to study the eifects of smoke and smog on public health. Philadelphia Mayor Dr. Daniel A. Poling, editor of the Christian Herald, and one of the coun try’s best-known clergymen, has thrown his hat in the political ring here as the hand-picked candidate of the Republican party for mayor of Philadelphia. Polit ical experts expect a real battle as the result of the disclosures of graft in the city hall in recent years which caused Philadelphia to go Democratic for the first time. Dr. Poling will be opposed in the primary election by Walter P. Mil ^ About a year ago, the University of Pennsylvania’s Dr. Carleton S. Coon explored an Iranian cave overlooking the Caspian Sea, 50 miles from Russia’s bor der. Digging through 28 layers of dirt and junk, he found among 31,000 items some sickles whose edges were coated with chemicals from cut grain. There were other evidences that the goat was the first animal ever domesticated. These excavations seemed to indicate that there were full-fledged primitive farm ers living about the year 6,000 B.C., a complete refutation of many current theories which would tend to show that man at that time was evolving from a semi-barbarian, carnivorous state. Every 18 Seconds «** A bleak picture of crime in the United States is being painted by F.B.I. Chief J. Edgar Hoover. In a recent testimony before the House Appropria tions Sub-Committee, he estimates that it is likely that' every 18 seconds a ma jor crime is committed somewhere in the United States; that during the 24 hours, nearly 300 persons are feloni ously killed or assaulted, 162 robberies and 3200 thefts committed. In a comparison of the first 9 months of 1950 with the first 9 months of 1941, the F.B.I. chief pointed out that there was a dangerous increase all along the line with a most alarming phase of the crime picture played by youths under 21 years of age. There is a fine article in the Sunday School Times, by Mr. Hoover, in which he urges parents to place their trust in the Sunday School and in the Sunday school teacher. He states in conclusion, “ The banner of Christ can lead the way Page Sixteen ler, industrialist. Early Farmers

All-Time High <** While the American people are using more oil products than ever before, at the end-of this year known oil supplies in the ground were greater than at any time in our history. A survey just com pleted by the American Petroleum In stitute reveals that the search for oil during 1950 disclosed nearly 3% billion barrels of potential supply. These new additions exceeded by over 50% the amount of oil taken from the ground last year and today the United States oil supplies in the ground are more than four times greater than 30 years ago. Two observations are pertinent here: First, that the loud pessimistic wails of those who believed we were running out of oil were false. Secondly, that un doubtedly the oil reserves of our planet are immeasurably higher than we real ize and could furnish the basis, some day, for a global conflagration. Darwin Rejected One of the most famous names in psychology is that of Dr. Mortimer J. Adler. In a recent lecture sponsored by the University of Chicago’s Roman Catholic Calvert Club, Adler tossed a bombshell. To a capacity crowd that filled the auditorium and spilled into the aisles, Adler tore into the Darwinian hypothesis by stating that men anti apes differ essentially in kind, not mere ly in degree. Man and apes, said he, are as far apart as a square and a triangle. There can be no intermediates and there can be no common ancestor. Thus he completely rejected Darwin’s hypothesis. However, Dr. Adler proposed two alter natives: first, a theory of “ emergent evolution” in which a higher species “evolves” from a lower with no inter mediate forms; or second, the possibil ity of man’s special creation by God in His own image. Statue Planned In Southern California where many curious ideas come to light, a colossal statue of Christ is being constructed which will stand upon the hills back of Hollywood. This figure will be 150 ft. high and will be finished in fused gold worth $250,000. It will be nearly half again as tall as the Statue of Liberty and three times taller than the famed Christ of the Andes. It will be called “ The Answer,” and according to its sponsor, Roger Noble Burnham, should lead men to faith in the Lord person ally. For his work Mr. Burnham is to receive not a penny. Another First The American Bible Society has just published another “ first” New Testament in the Rikwango language used by 16 mission stations in S. W. Belgian Congo. There are about 500,000 people who speak this language. Ten thousand copies have been published and are now being distributed. T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S

to the moral and spiritual rebirth of our great nation. In the forefront of His banner bearers are the Sunday Schools!” Israel's Courage Most of the world has been applaud ing the courage of that infant among nations, the new nation of Israel. In an address by David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s premier, the facts regarding its growth were given. A thousand immigrants are arriving in the new country every day! The premier declared, “We look upon each one as an asset, no matter how poor in worldly goods he might be, for we feel that every Jew has a natural and inalienable right to come to Israel.” A campaign for selling $500,000,000 of Israel government bonds has begun. Jericho Palace & A recent report to the American Schools of Oriental Research in Jerusa lem disclosed the discovery at Jericho of the largest ancient palace yet uncov ered in Palestine. This was a large rec tangular structure about as large as a football gridiron, with 36 rooms opening into a colonnaded, luxurious open Ori ental court. Constructed of cut sand stone, the building once had elaborate baths for both hot and cold water and artistically designed mosaic floors. Pos sibly the builder was King Herod who has a place in the history of infamy because of his order decreeing the deaths of Bethlehem’s children in his hope to destroy the Child Jesus. Portugal Challenge Recently a very unusual occurrence took place when the missionaries of the Evangelical Alliance Mission were able to rent a former Roman Catholic Church in Sines, Portugal. Though Portugal is considered a Catholic country, mission aries report that people attend the Protestant meetings very freely and a great number of the population are Catholic in name only. The Evangelical Alliance Mission is hoping for 50 new workers to meet the challenge which present opportunities afford.
