worldly pleasure or for books, maga- .zines, etc., that displease Him, we have grieved His heart greatly. All that we have belongs to Him; those who truly love Him will be sure that all of their money, time, strength, etc., is used in a way that will bring honor to their Lord’s name. August 19, 1951 THE CHRISTIAN AND THE GOVERNMENT Luke 20:19-26; 1 Pet. 2:13-17 Pointers on the Lesson It is true that the Christian in a very definite sense is not of this world. He belongs to the heavenly world and his highest loyalties should be manifest to ward it. But it is also true that while the child of God is in this world, he has certain responsibilities toward the gov ernment under which he lives. In teach ing the lesson for this week the teacher will heed to make a clear distinction between tribute which belongs to Caesar (the state), and worship which alone belongs to God. He will also set forth the importance and place of these two loyalties in the believer’s life. Jesus’ Object Lesson Luke 20:19-26 In this passage we find the leaders in Israel again busy at the nefarious busi ness of trying to catch Jesus in some inconsistency and so arouse disfavor to ward Him particularly upon the part of the Roman authorities. Verse 20 shows what kind of men these were and what was the nature of their business. It was their plan to ‘‘feign themselves just men” and by some subtlety catch Him in some error in order that “they might deliver him unto the power and au thority of the governor.” What a dia bolical attitude! How devilish were the hearts of these men! Truly they were as “whited sepulchres full of dead men’s bones.” In verse 21 their feigning took the form of flattery. They said some nice things about Jesus. However if they had believed what they said they would have given heed to His words which they never did. These critics of Jesus were trying to get Him into disfavor with the Roman government and thus they would be aided in their great desire to be rid of Him. So they asked Him (v. 22) if it was proper to give tribute to Caesar. They figured that He might say no and thus incur the enmity of the Roman power. But Jesus was not deceived (v. 23). In order to give a clear answer to the question directed to Him, Jesus pre sented an object lesson. This, by the way, is ofttimes a good method by which to get across a spiritual message. Teach ers, take heed! Jesus took a denarius, a coin that might be compared to a quarter of our money, and asked them whose superscription it contained. They said, Caesar’s (v. 24). Then Jesus gave His classic exhortation, “ Render . . . unto Caesar the things which be Cae sar’s, and unto God the things which
