Home With Him "In the Father’s house are many abiding places.”—John 14:2. H E R E is a great truth clothed in the simplest words. God’s children are to me His housemates. He will have a home filled with children. This not only teaches that heaven is a placé, not merely a state of mind, but answers the question as to our relationships in heaven. We are not to dwell in our several compartments but as children in the Father’s house. The sweet familiarity of a. happy home is im plied. The thought is bound to become more precious as the years slip away. Home is the center around which our af fections turn. When it breaks up here on earth, the Father has one for us above in which there shall be perfect communion forever. Is there any misgiving in your mind about it? Do you say this may be only some elaborate symbolism? Jesus answers : “If it were not so, I would tell you.’’ He was not filling the minds of His • disciples with delusive hopes but wanted them to understand that the things He said were literally true. Unspeakable Gift In 2 Cor. 9:15, Paul exclaims, “Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable Gift.” God has many gifts which He graciously bestows upon the children of men, but there is oné gift which is rightly called “unspeakable.” The apostle does not tell us in so many words what it is, but we feel instinctively that it is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ. He is frequently represented in the Scriptures as God’s
Gift, as e.g. in John 3 :16, and certainly He is altogether unspeakable. That does not mean that we cannot s p e a k about Him, but that we cannot say all that there is to be said, and all that we would like to say about Him. All the sermons which have ever been preached, and all the books, which have been written concerning Him, have only touched the fringe of this inexhaustible theme. He is unspeakably great, and none loved to extol His greatness more than St. Paul. Moreover, He is unspeakably necessary. If God had withheld this gift our case would have been hopeless, for all our salvation from first to last is in Him. Well may we say: “T h a n k s be unto God.” How can we possibly do other wise? Foreknowledge Before Predestination Mr. Northcote, a friend of Toplady’s, once observed: “Mr. Toplady believes in absolute predestination, and yet he is loth to ride on horse-back for fear of break ing his neck.” “True,” replied Toplody, “and perhaps that very fear may be an appointed means of preserving my neck unbroken.” They Die Well Whatever may be thought of the truth of the doctrine of Christianity no candid man will question its power in the house of mourning and in the hour of death. “The world,” wrote Wesley, “may not like our Methodists and evangelical people, but the world cannot deny that they die well.” ¿Me.
