The Anger of Jesus “Jesus looked round about on them with anger (Mk. 3:5). "tlAVE we found a weak point in the character of Jesus? No. Eph. 4:26 shows there is a righteous anger. “Be ye angry and sin not.” The only way to be angry and not sin is to be angry at nothing but sin. Even here we must be very watchful lest it run into sin. There fore Paul adds: “Let not the sun go down upon your wrath.” It is danger ous to nurse it after going to bed. In the case before us, our Lord was indig nant with those who valued the sacredness of a certain set of hours above the sacred ness of human life. Dr. Beecher said: “There is an anger that is damnable. It is the anger of selfishness, There is an anger as majestic as the frown of Jeho vah’s brow. It is the anger of truth and love.” Dr. Jowett said: “My power of anger is not to be destroyed; it is to be transformed and purified. Anger can be like an unclean bonfire; it can also be like a sea of glass mingled with fire. There can be more smoke than light in it, more selfish passion than holy purpose. The. fuel that feeds it may be envy and jealousy and spite, and not a big desire for the good of men and glory of God. Worldly anger is “set on fire of hell.” Holy anger borrows flame from the altar- fires of God.” Let Him Deny Himself—Mk. 8 :34 "K4TSS Winifred Rouzee, addressing a company of Bible Institute workers on these words, pointed out that we are not here called upon to deny a LIST OF THINGS—but SELF—that old self-life that is ever rising up and for which we make all kinds of excuses. A fine illus tration of the meaning of denying self was given in referring to Peter’s denial of Christ, when Peter went so far as to say, “I know not the man.” Let that be the attitude we take to the promptings of the old nature—I KNOW YOU NOT. This is being “crucified with Christ”—: and crucifixion was a lingering death. Thus we may say with Paul: “I die daily and as. we turn the cold shoulder upon self we shall LIVE—nevertheless, not we, but Christ in us. An old saint placed his candle in front of the paint ing of the face of the Christ and then as he watched it waste, exclaimed: “So may SELF in me be wasted that men may see JESUS ONLY. “The world is say ing to us what Thomas said to Jesus,”' declared Miss Rouzee, “Except we see the print of the nails we will not believe.” They have a perfect right to demand it. We are “living epistles of Christ,” but blurred and unreadable until self has been turned dbwn and CHrist enthroned. Story of a Soul “I once lived in Eph. 2:12 and walked in Eph. 2:2,” writes a Christian soldier in India. “My conversation was then in Eph. 2 :3, but being brought into Eph. 2 :1 and finding my prospects at Rom. 3 :10-20 K CHURCH FURNITURE E'ocrythingfor Church and Sunday School use. were very bad, I called at Matt, 11:28. From here I was conducted to Col. 1:13, and dwelt in Psa. 84:10. Hearing of a mansion being built for me at Jn. 14:2 by One who lives at Heb. 4:14, the house I sought for I found at 2 Cor. 5:1. The house has but one door, which I found at Jn. 10:9, and one knocker, which I saw at Matt. 7 :7. My address for the present is Eph. 2 :6. Call any day at Prov. 8 :34 and you will meet me and many others. If you call, attend to what the servant says in Lk. 14:17. When 1 Thess. 4:16- 17 is fulfilled, I expect my home will be in Rev. 22:3-5 and Rev. 5:9 will be the song I shall sing in that day.” Saved and Safe The believer is b o t h —saved by the blood, and; sife under the b l ood . A Christian remaiked, “I’m glad I’m saved,” to which a friend replied, “I’m glad I’m safe." What a world of truth! Saved by the death of C h r i s t (Rom. 5:6), and safe in the risen life of Christ (Rom. 5:10). Of course a- mere pretender is not safe^ior he it not saved. But a child of God is.kept (II Tim. 1 :12), he is guar anteed (Phil. 1:6), protected (John 10: 28), assured (I John 5 :13), a child (Rom. 8:16), out of death (I John 3:14), into life (John 5:24), acquitted (Rom. 8:1), anchored (Heb. 6:19), glorified (Rom. 8 :30); he is chosen, predestined, adopted, accepted, redeemed, forgiven, sealed, pur chased, and exalted (Eph. ch.l). Arid all in Christ! ^Background offt b e tterLife Would you rather _have your children read’the funny pic tures and follow thè example of their caricatures or read, these stirring Bible stories and mold their lives on the pattern of the heroic characters that move and breathe through them.
