‘This once in a lifetime trip (to Ecuador) was invaluable in the learning and experience provided. I was overwhelmed by the entire two weeks. Not only was I able to learn about the endemic species of the various biomes I visited but also the cultures of the local indigenous peoples and learned about the ecological problems they face.’ Felix, Year 13 Within the past year we have welcomed a wide range of high profile speakers to the department including the best-selling author of This is Going to Hurt , Adam Kay OA and stem cell scientist Professor David Tosh from the Centre for Regenerative Medicine in Bath. In October we hosted a talk by Dr Conor Kenny from Medicins Sans Frontiers on his work helping refugees attempting to cross the Mediterranean from Africa. Every year we enter a number of national competitions including the Biology Olympiad. This year we achieved one Gold, one Silver and two Bronze Awards and three Higher Commendations. We are very much of the opinion that ‘out of classroom’ learning experiences play a vital role in nurturing the enthusiasm and interest of our students. As such, they are an important adjunct to our delivery of the Biology curriculum.
