‘In preparing for the Target 2.0 competition my knowledge of macroeconomics increased enormously. We learned new things every time we had our meetings and learned a lot about how to carry out research and use data to support my arguments.’ Kody, Year 12 Many of the students have submitted essays in national competitions including the Royal Economic Society Essay Competition, and the New College of the Humanities Essay Competition. Pupils write articles for, and edit, the Department’s Political Economy Review publication, which is distributed on Founder’s Day, with proceeds going to the College’s Bursary Fund. ‘I felt an enormous sense of pride having my work published in the Political Economy Review. I thoroughly enjoyed researching, and writing my article on the Deglobalisation Dilemma. It was a topic I care deeply about, and I enjoyed being able to express myself.’ Avi, Year 12

‘The success we had in the Young Enterprise competition showed how well we worked as a team. We produced a product we can be really proud of and it was great to have to opportunity to work as a team with students from another school; effective communication became particularly important’ Obafemi, Year 13 Outings Students have enjoyed numerous outings this year, including a visit to several City of London Institutions including the Bank of England, the London Metal Exchange (LME), and BlackRock Asset Management. In April 2017, 30 economics students went on a three-day trip to Catalonia, visiting the University of Barcelona, the Nou Camp, the Estrella Damm brewery, and the Formula 1 circuit amongst other venues. A dozen lucky students spent 10 days in Cuba in October 2017, witnessing first-hand how a planned economy is slowly transitioning to a market system. ‘The trip to Barcelona was fantastic. We saw first-hand the way in which businesses operate. The scale of production and use of machines in the brewery was amazing. It was good fun as well!’ George, Year 13 The Economics department led the organisation of Dulwich Political, an ambitious free learning week for students of all ages. All year groups were involved in a huge programme of events, with talks from MPs, civil society actions groups and activists.
