Thinking Matters 2018

GEOGRAPHY Squeezing into the Friday lunchtime Geography Society meetings it is clear to see that this student- led society is in the prime of its life. A committed and dynamic Year 13 leadership team arrange a vast array of visiting and internal speakers who entertain and challenge with their talks on a weekly basis. Recent topics have pushed the spectrum of the subject from the Geopolitics of ISIS to the Geography of Beards. In the past year speakers have ranged from Nobel Prize winner Benny Dembitzner to current students and the leadership team are constantly on the hunt for both internal and external speakers. The large and active membership can be spotted proudly sporting their uniquely recognizable polar bear ties around the campus. of its studies very seriously and regularly runs expeditions to both near and distant shores with recent departures for the Lower, Middle and Upper schools to Iceland and Cuba. Year 12 and 13 students embarked upon an expedition to Cuba in 2017 and were able to personally study and experience a society, economy and culture like no other. The students stayed in Casas (homestays) rather than hotels, allowing them to experience a truly authentic snapshot of life on the island. Fascinating visits and activities took the group from collectivised tobacco plantations in the Vinales Valley and lectures in geography and economics from professors at the University of Havana, to evening Salsa lessons in Old Havana. The next international adventure jets off to the mountains and caves of Slovenia in July 2019. β€˜It was amazing to visit such a uniquely different city, unlike anywhere else I have been. Talking to the people was great, they were so happy to tell us about their county.’ Thomas, Year 13 on Cuba - Havana

The Geography Scholars Reading Club works to spark debate and discussion amongst its Year 13 members by dealing with the big questions in the subject and helps prepare pupils for the next phase in their studies at university. The Lower School Geo Explorers Club continues to build enthusiasm and passion in the subject from Year 7 and pupils are encouraged to develop their skills through debates on current issues such as deforestation in the Amazon and the future of our planet.
