Thinking Matters 2018

Cologne trip, June 2018

The supra and co-curricular activities that Dulwich Linguists take part in are challenging, enjoyable and ultimately heighten their appreciation of communication in all its forms. These activities include; 16 annual trips and exchanges, model plane-building in French, an Italian Upper School breakfast club and seminars led by pupils and visiting academics through the ‘European Culture Society’. Pupils also take an active role in the Languages Week celebrations where they build their appreciation and knowledge of languages beyond the classroom through a cornucopia of events ranging from theatre workshops and interactive seminars in translation and multi-lingual sports journalism, combined with taster sessions in languages not taught in the classroom. We also actively encourage pupils to participate in language competitions and events outside the College. These include; Stephen Spender Translation Prize, London Schools’ French and Spanish debating competitions, HSBC / British Council Chinese Speaking Competition, UK-German Connection Young Ambassadors scheme, UK Linguistics Olympiad, the Chartered Institute of Linguists’ ‘Real Lives’ examinations and the European Commission’s ‘Juvenes Translatores’ translation competition. We are very proud of our pupils’ participation and success in these motivating events. Large numbers of pupils choose to take part in these trips and activities and their enthusiasm speaks for itself, as the following testaments show. ‘If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language that goes to his heart.’ Nelson Mandela

‘The highlights for us of the Cologne trip (besides tasting Currywurst for the first time!) were climbing the 533 steps up to the top of the cathedral and the language lessons with our teacher Sebastian, which were great fun. We learnt a lot of new things and I feel our speaking skills improved a lot.” Charlie and Alex, Year 11 ‘I thought that the Year 9 language exercise interviewing local people was interesting but challenging at the same time. Although it was hard to understand everything that our interviewees were saying, it was still fun. I feel more confident speaking German to German

people now.’ Jasper, Year 11
