Thinking Matters 2018

POLITICS ‘Events, dear boy, events!’ Harold Macmillan may have found the political cycle and the ever-changing nature of the political environment a source of apprehension but it is the lifeblood of the Dulwich College Politics Society. The Society meets weekly to discuss a range of topical issues but also the overarching thematic and ideological drivers of political problems and their policy responses.

Pupils in the Politics Society enjoy hearing from a wide range of external speakers throughout the year.

We strive to expose the pupils to nascent policy areas and movements and have welcomed guest speakers from across the political spectrum. For example, Matt Zarb-Cousin, a former Jeremy Corbyn press spokesman and high profile left-wing commentator, recently gave a detailed insight into his time working with the Labour party leadership. This past 18 months have given us plenty to discuss. Even the most ardent Corbynista would have found it difficult to believe that Theresa May’s snap election would result in a hung parliament where she would have to go cap-in-hand to Arlene Foster and the DUP to keep the keys to number ten. Donald Trump’s election and tenure as POTUS has been a constant source of impassioned argument in terms of his policy agenda and sheer disbelief in terms of the methods he has adopted to run the White House. However, it has unsurprisingly been the drama of the Brexit negotiation that has taken up most of our time and the contentious twists and turns since the government triggered Article 50 have dominated our agenda.
