Interment of ashes An interment (burying below ground) of ashes service will typically take place after a cremation, with family and friends holding a memorial service in a suitable location and or a gathering at the interment location. The service can be led by a religious leader, humanist/celebrant, funeral conductor or someone close to the deceased. They can include eulogies, prayers, readings, and poems. Doves or butterflies can be released when the interment service is held outdoors. The ashes are usually placed inside an urn or casket, sealed, and then lowered into the ground. Depending on the site, some interments may not need an urn at all. In these scenarios, the ashes may be scattered into the plot. If the service is being held at a natural burial site, you will likely need a biodegradable urn. The most usual places for the burial of ashes are in small graves in cemeteries, added to existing graves in cemeteries/churchyards, crematoria gardens of remembrance, woodland burial grounds and in parish churchyards. Cemetery or churchyard You may wish to inter the ashes in a family burial plot, should you already have one. If you don’t have an existing plot, you’ll need to purchase an exclusive right of burial. This is typically purchased for a period of up to 99 years and will have certain conditions attached to it, depending on what type of grave it is. Natural burial ground Many natural burial grounds and woodland burial sites across the UK offer plots for the interment of ashes. If this is an option which you would like to explore, you will likely need to purchase a biodegradable urn.

Columbarium/ashes niches A columbarium is a building, room, or wall which is designed to hold cremation urns. It’s an above-ground interment option and they can be found in some cemeteries and crematoria across the UK. Burial of ashes at sea The burial or scattering of a loved one’s ashes at sea can be a memorable way to honour those who enjoyed life on the water. Private land Similar to scattering ashes on private land, the interment of ashes on private land is legal as long as you have the landowner’s permission to do so. Burying ashes in your garden You might not think there is much to consider if burying the ashes in your own garden, but by law, ashes are treated the same as a human body. Restrictions apply if you are burying the ashes in an urn or box, not for scattering the ashes.

Costs The overall cost for an interment of ashes service will largely depend on the price of the burial plot. These vary significantly across the UK. If you already have a family burial plot, we can arrange for it to be reopened before the interment of ashes service. If you would like burial plots which are next to each other, you can enquire about purchasing or reserving multiple plots. Your funeral co-ordinator will be able to advise you on costs and local charges. All our memorial service packages include a personal consultation to discuss your requirements either at our funeral home, via the phone or in the comfort of your own home, where we will provide: • Comprehensive information and guidance for all types of memorial services and Interment • Collation and clerical assistance with the completion of all statutory documentation • Guidance on monumental masonry, ashes containers, floristry, newspaper notices, funeral vehicles and all other associated products and services • Management of all enquiries relating to the service

Alternatives to the interment of ashes
Divide the ashes If your family cannot decide or agree on what to do with your loved one’s ashes, it’s perfectly acceptable to divide them up and do several different things. This can be a great way to fulfil the wishes of the deceased and those who are mourning the death. Ashes jewellery and keepsakes Cremation jewellery or keepsakes can help you feel close to a loved one again. Popular pieces include necklaces, rings, art, paperweights and you only need a small amount of your loved one’s ashes to create a beautiful keepsake. Ashes urns Cremation urns are containers designed to store ashes. The remains can be interred in numerous ways; however, choosing the right vessel can make a difference in the long run. They can also be used to keep the ashes at home. Ashes sent into space To celebrate your loved one’s life, Aura Flights’ unique space burial service launches their ashes to the edge of space and releases them to travel the world on a breath-taking final journey. The ascent and release are captured on video to create a treasured memorial film to remember the event. With a commitment to quality and care, we’ll be there to guide you throughout the journey. Scatter the ashes Scattering the ashes of a loved one can be a great way to pay tribute to their life; this can take place at a memorable location, or somewhere that meant something to the deceased.
