With this teaching Paul’s doctrine agrees: “ For whoso ever shall call on the name o f the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not be lieved? and how shall they believe in him o f whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? and how shall they preach, except they be sent? . . . So then faith c'ometh by hearing, and, hearing by the word o f God” (Rom. 10:13-17). Why do we insist that the Holy Spirit performs His gracious work in the human heart through the Word of God? Our purpose is to defend and save the Church from fanaticism and. false illuminism and mysticism. If time and space permitted, we could cite many instances in history to show the harmful effects of a false illuminism which leads men to think that their experience is some thing superior to the teaching of the Bible; that they are directly enlightened by the Holy Spirit, so that they are in dependent of the W ord ; so that they even feel that they can criticize God’s Word. We hold that a true, Biblically- begotten experience of pardon and salvation can never turn about and hack the Bible to pieces, the very instru ment through which it was begotten by the Holy Spirit. To sum up, what is the relation of the Holy Spirit to the Word of God? It is this: (1 ) The Holy Spirit indited the Word, so that it is all divine. (2 ) The Holy Spirit honors the Word and uses it as His vehicle for begetting the work of grace in the human heart. — o— Commencement T HE twentieth annual commencement exercises of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles were held June 15 to 17, 1930. The baccalaureate sermon, which appears in this issue, was preached by Rev. P. W . Philpott, D.D. The commencement address was delivered by Rev. Herbert Booth Smith, D.D., pastor of Immanuel Presbyterian Church, .Los Angeles. At the class exercises on Tuesday morning brief addresses were given by five members o f the graduating class. The Scripture, “ In his strength” (Eph. 6:10 ), chosen by the class as its motto, became the theme of the class song. The graduates included five from the Evening Course, sixty from the Day Course, one from the Postgraduate Course, and four from the Chris tian Service Medical Course. Christ in Us “ That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith” (Eph. 3:17). “ The Lord Jesus does indeed come to dwell with His people. This is not a beautiful figure of speech, but it is a real visitation of God. I wonder if we know what this means. Christ is not to be an outside influence which moves on our emotions and feelings and elevates us into a sublime idea of God ; but the real presence of Christ has come within us to remain, and He brings with Him all His resources of help and love and mighty power. If you have God within you, how it should make you walk in holy reverence always, for you carry within your breast a jewel of infinite value.”— -Dr. A . B. Simpson. “ How can I ever be lonely, How can I ever fall; What can I want if only Christ is my all in all?

“ Thy Kingdom Come” Lord, when we pray, “ Thy kingdom come,” Then fold our hands without a care For souls whom Thou hast died to save, We do but mock Thee with our prayer, . Thou couldst have sent an angel band To call Thy erring children home; And thus through heavenly ministries On earth Thy kingdom might have come. To word and work shall not our hands Obedient move, nor lips be dumb? Lest through our sinful love o f ease Thy kingdom should delay to come. mM-Word and Work.

Enlarged Radio Ministry T O Rev; Charles E. Fuller, Pastor of Calvary Church, an interdenominational faith work at Placentia, Cali fornia, has come a vision of the possibilities connected with the broadcasting of the Gospel message. Mr. Fuller is a graduate of the Bible Institute o f Los Angeles and the Chairman of its Board of Directors. During the past four months, while his sermons have been broadcast over a small radio station, many expressions of appreciation have been received. Now, in answer to prayer and through the generosity of one of God’s stewards, the morning and evening services of Calvary Church, beginning Septem ber 14, may be enjoyed by a much larger circle of friends through KGER, Long Beach, one of the best 1000-watt stations in the south, operating on a frequency of 1360 kilocycles. The Holy Spirit and the Bible ( Continued from page 380) would preserve them from generation to genér'ation in their truth and integrity; and thus they become the iner- rant channel through which He performs His gracious work in the hearts of men. T he T estimony of T he W ord , The Holy Scriptures bear clear witness regarding the source of the new birth. They say that regenerated men are “ born, not o f blood, nor o f the will o f the flesh, nor of the will o f man, but o f God” (John 1:13). Again, they teach that.men must “ be born o f water and the Spirit?’ (John 3: 5) . And again they speak of men “ being born again, not o f corruptible seed, but o f incorruptible, by the word o f God, which liveth and abideth for ever” (1 Pet. 1:23). All these passages teach the same vital doctrine. When they are correlated, they mean that God and the Holy Spirit are one in their operations, and that the Holy Spirit employs the Word of God as His vehicle for bring ing saving truth to .the human soul. Our Lord clearly taught the same: “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one, that judgeth him : the word that I spake, the same shall judge him in the last day” (John 12:48). Yes, even the final divine judgment will be according to the norm o f God’s Word, and that carries with it the truth that God operates through His Holy Word. : :. | t , 7}

Christ in me, O wonderful story; Christ in me, the hope of glory.”
