WHO PAYS THE WRONGFUL DEATH SETTLEMENT AFTER A HIT-AND-RUN? A Resource in Case of Tragedy
UM INSURANCE: A RESOURCE IN CASE OF TRAGEDY Here in South Carolina, the families of hit-and-run victims can recover a wrongful death settlement from the victim’s own insurance policy in the form of uninsured motorist coverage (UM). Our state requires UM by law, and it’s designed specifically to cover car, truck, and motorcycle drivers in case of hit-and-run crashes or collisions caused by drivers without insurance. THE UPHILL BATTLE TO USE UM Unfortunately, even though UM is designed for these situations, your deceased family member’s insurance company may not be sympathetic. Most victims are shocked to discover when they try to use a UM policy, the insurance company that should be on their side resists helping them. We can help reveal the full extent of insurance coverage available to you, which may be more than you know. For example, a victim with more than one vehicle might hold multiple UM policies with attainable settlement.
