SUMMARY OF MAIN JOB PURPOSE: To be the professional lead providing a competent health and safety service to the University com- munity. To own and develop the University’s Health and Safety Management System and engage and influence stakeholders to achieve continual improvement in health and safety performance and culture through the development of a University health and safety strategy. To lead and manage the Health and Safety team, resources and services provided to University stakeholders.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES The following responsibilities and duties will be undertaken from various campuses and loca- tions which will require regular travel: • To understand the risk profile of the Uni- versity and work collaboratively to prepare a health and safety plan to resource and deliver the necessary systems, tools, peo- ple and culture to ensure compliance and manage risk. • To take ownership of the University Health and Safety Management System ensuring it reflects the University’s health and safety arrangements and is effective and propor- tionate to the risk. • To lead and manage the Health and Safety Team and manage the associated budget. This includes overseeing specific health and safety services provided by the health and safety function, for example but not restricted to: the University emergency response and incident management pro- cess; the campus inspections and audit programmes; health surveillance and air monitoring programmes; enquiry system; incident reporting and investigation pro- cess; and specialist software applications. • To be the University’s professional health and safety lead providing assistance and authoritative advice to the Board of Gov- ernors, Vice Chancellor and Leadership

Team. This includes escalating and advis- ing on health and safety risk and lead on and be a member of the University’s emer- gency response and incident management team (UERIMP). • To identify lessons learned from incident investigations, deriving plans to address outcomes and monitoring progress with recommendations. This will include under- taking investigations or assisting investigat- ing managers to determine the underlying and root causes. • To develop and lead on work to continu- ally improve health and safety culture and behavioural ensuring a culture of individual H&S responsibility and ownership. • To lead on engagement with key external groups and organisations, including main- taining professional networks to keep cur- rent with health and safety legislation and developments and being a point of contact for enforcement authorities. • To oversee an annual health and safety audit programme, where necessary under- taking the role of lead auditor. • To select benchmark data and develop per- formance indicators analysing performance to identify trends and gain insights improv- ing health and safety performance. • Lead and Coordinate the University Health and Safety Committee and attend other committees and forums as required provid-

ing advice, relevant papers and reports. • To prepare and submit Health and Safety Reports including the annual report for ap- proval at the Audit and Risk Committee. • Work in partnership to develop and imple- ment a health and safety learning and de- velopment programme for staff. Delivering training as appropriate. • Provide up to date and engaging informa- tion and health and safety documentation through appropriate resources e.g. UCA website, Staff Portal, Teams etc. • To support People and Culture and wider University projects. OTHER DUTIES • Able to respond to emergencies within and outside of normal working hours. • To undertake such other duties as are with- in the scope and spirit of the job purpose, the job title, and the grade. • Take responsibility for the health and safety of yourself and others in carrying out the duties of the role. • To promote equality, diversity and inclusion in your performance of your duties. • To take responsibility for safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults as a member of UCA staff. • To actively participate in learning and development to meet the requirements of your role and the University.
