We experience grief for many reasons throughout our lives, which is most notably related to losing something or someone important to us. Examples could be the loss of a family pet after living a healthy and long life or moving away from a house that you lived in for many years. Of course, there’s also the most difficult loss, which is that of a loved one. It’s normal to experience grief after any of these situations, so it can be beneficial to take some time to grieve in a healthy manner. Keep in mind that people should allow themselves to process their grief in whichever way they may need to. Your grief does not adhere to anyone else’s timeline. People tell us that “you’ll get over it” or “they’re in a better place,” but these sayings don’t often soothe people. On the contrary, they can make things worse. In our experience, we’ve talked with many widows who share that their kids have told them when it’s time to stop crying. However, if you ever lost your life partner, you should be allowed to cry and feel a certain way. Your behavior is a testament to the importance that your loved one held in your life. When it comes to grieving, you want to be as gentle as possible, especially in the early days. Take whatever time you need and don’t put yourself in situations that may be too difficult until you’re ready. It can help to discuss past memories of what you lost with someone who understands what you’re going through. In a way, it can be an uplifting moment to reflect and reminisce about shared memories and experiences. While grief never truly fades away, you can walk away from the experience feeling empowered. You’ll slowly realize that you can continue on with your life despite your loss. It may never be easy but you’ll be stronger as an individual for navigating the grieving process.
