CH IM E S The following verses were penned by a night watchman in one of the big department stores of Los Angeles, his heart having been touched by the ring­ ing of the Bible Institute chimes: “ The noise and tumult of the day With sunset slowly dies away, And many a hurrying footstep stays While many a troubled spirit prays. For through the quiet evening hour, Rich with perfume of many a flower Through all the city’s streets there swells The pleasant sound of evening bells. “ At the Cross” ; “ Sweet hour of prayer,” Help me forget fatigue and care And ere my vagrant thoughts may roam, The bells chime, “ Lord I’m coming Home.” And then “ Old Hundred’s” cherished notes Blend with our reverent, grateful thoughts Of God, from Whom all blessings flow, To all His creatures here below.” PREACHING IN POWER As C. H. Spurgeon opened the door, one Sunday morning, back of the pulpit in the Tabernacle, and saw the great number of people, he was overheard to say, “ O God, help!” Strong as he was, he realized that he was insufficient for so great a task as preaching the Gospel in power, unless God should be his Helper. The appeal of weakness to Omnipotent Strength is never unheeded.
