Support Medical Progress on National Donor Day As many readers know, my daughter is an M1, which means she’s in her first year of medical school. She recently called home so excited. What’s the news, we wondered? Twenty cadavers had been donated to her medical school! Now, she and her fellow students will have the opportunity to — for want of a better term — open them up. I have always been an organ donor. But now that members of my family are entering or working in the medical profession, I realize how much it means to these future doctors and nurses of the world to study the human body in such detail. It made me think about how Leonardo da Vinci made his most famous sketch of the human body, “Vitruvian Man,” showing the anatomy of a human body in two positions, superimposed one on the other. Da Vinci created that iconic image in part by examining corpses. Training for medical students these days is so much more advanced. Not only are they taught to heal the body, but also the mind and the soul. In support of their work, I would encourage everybody to become an organ and tissue donor or to donate their bodies to science. After all, we’re all going to die one day. One of the best, most unselfish things we could do is to donate our bodies for medical research or education, or to provide an organ, eye, or tissue to somebody who might need it. Who knows? That recipient might be the one who comes up with a cure for cancer. More than 100,000 people are currently on the waiting list for organ donations, and an estimated 17 people die each day for want of a donated organ.
