Will You Join the Madness?

ENTER OUR CONTEST TO WIN A 43-INCH TV FOR BASKETBALL SEASON

When people ask me to share a fun or surprising fact about myself, one of the things I like to throw out is that I’ve played basketball with Kevin Garnett. If you haven’t heard of him, odds are you aren’t an NBA fan, because Kevin played for 21 seasons. He was so good that he was a first-round draft pick of the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1995 right out of high school and went on to win a championship with the Boston Celtics. If you want to know the whole story of how I was lucky enough to meet and play with Kevin, you’ll have to ask me at your next appointment. I can’t give all my secrets away in the newsletter! But with that bit of background, hopefully you’ll understand how much of a bummer it was for me when I heard that the NCAA had canceled March Madness last year.

I was, but we’re hoping that this year the competition will be back on. At the time of this writing, March Madness is forging ahead, and the last word is that the whole tournament will be played in Indianapolis to limit exposure to COVID-19. Personally, I don’t care where the games happen — I’m just excited they’re happening! To celebrate the return of March Madness, my team came up with a new office contest. From now until Feb. 28, every time you refer someone to us for an orthodontic visit, you’ll be entered to win a 43-inch TV for your March Madness watch party! You only have to take a few simple steps to make your entry official. If you plan to make a referral, simply pick up a contest card from our office on your next visit, write your name on it, and pass it on to a friend or family member. If they come in and give us that card, the entry will be official.

We’ll pick a contest winner at random on March 1. If you win because you made a referral, both you AND the person you referred to us will get your own big-screen TVs. I don’t know about you, but I’d love a huge TV for my March Madness watch party! If you win, we’ll contact you directly, but you can also keep an eye on our office Facebook page (Facebook.com/ MarshallOrtho/) for updates on March 1. Of course, you don’t have to be a basketball fan to enter our contest and take home a giant TV. Movie buffs and Netflix addicts are welcome, too! Whatever you like to watch, hopefully having an awesome viewing experience will improve your 2021. As always, thank you for your support of Marshall Orthodontics during this crazy pandemic time. We couldn’t do the work we love without you. Now, let the games begin! – Dr. William Marshall

LET THAT FRESH AIR FUEL YOU 4 TIPS TO MAKE GETTING OUTSIDE EASIER

3. Take your work outside. If you’re working from home, take some work outdoors. Phone and virtual meetings are a great outdoor option, especially if you’ll just be an active listener and aren’t required to do any work simultaneously. Attach a note to your meeting reminders to get yourself set up outside five minutes before you start. 4. Create a schedule. It might feel strange to set reminders throughout the day to step outside, but you easily get wrapped up in activities and overlook breaks, and these reminders are exactly what you need. Start with 10-minute blocks three times a day. If you stick to them, soon you won’t need a schedule to get outside anymore. Winter weather may be cold, but even when you’re bundled up under a jacket and scarf, just 5–10 minutes outside can do wonders for your mood and energy for hours.

Hunkering down and waiting for the dark and chilly winter season to pass sounds pretty nice. But the reality is, if we deprive ourselves of time outside, we do ourselves a big disservice both mentally and physically. Staying indoors all day affects our energy and mood, which makes it hard to get anything done, so here are four easy tips to make it easier to get a little fresh air. 1. Make it a priority. Getting outside means making the conscious effort to do so. If you want to reap its benefits, you have to decide to make it a priority in your day-to-day schedule. If you make the act important to you, you have more motivation to actually do it. 2. Use mornings effectively. Waking up and getting the day started can be hard. But studies have shown that natural light helps decrease your melatonin production, which means you feel ready to face the day sooner. So, set yourself a second alarm to head outside and take a quick walk around the block just after waking. Don’t even wash your face or grab coffee. Just get out there.

Boost Your Self-Confidence in 2021 WITH A LIFE-CHANGING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

When Naomi Garnice was in her early 20s, a man at a bar asked her a question that shook her confidence to its core: “You’re perfect — other than those teeth . Doesn’t that bother you?” Naomi recounted the story in an article for The Muse, but she isn’t the only one who has had that experience. When new patients come into our office to get braces or Invisalign, they almost always point to insecurity about their teeth as a reason for seeking treatment. These insecurities aren’t unfounded. There’s a strong link between a beautiful smile, how you’re perceived, and your self-confidence. One study conducted by Kelton for Invisalign found that teeth are the first thing one-third of Americans notice about a person’s face. Seventy-three percent of respondents also said they would be more likely to trust someone with a “nice smile” than a person with “a good job, outfit, or car,” and 38% wouldn’t consider going on a second date with someone whose teeth were crooked. Similarly, an Invisalign-Harris Poll survey of more than 2,000 people who’d had their teeth straightened found respondents felt they were

perceived as happier (60%), more attractive (50%), more successful (50%), and smarter (40%) with straight teeth. A whopping 92% were also more confident after treatment — just like Naomi Garnice, who decided to get braces at 29. “I couldn’t be more in love with the end results, but even a month or two into treatment, I’d already noticed an extra boost of confidence from my teeth moving into the right alignment,” Naomi wrote for The Muse. “In fact, in the time I had braces, I powered more business relationships and found more career momentum than ever before, even moving into a management role at work.” This is the outcome we want for all of our patients! Whether you’re young or old, successful or just starting out, low self- confidence can hold you back from achieving your goals, but a straight smile can be the antidote. To start 2021 on the right foot, set up an appointment with us today to see if braces or Invisalign is right for you. And if you already love your smile, please pass this article on to a friend or family member who could use a confidence boost. We can help them find the self-assurance to follow their dreams this year!

Meet Emerie, Our Team’s Little Lion Cub Our Assistant Brenda Had a Baby! Brenda Rivas is one of our best orthodontic assistants, but eight months ago she took on a new title: Mom! After nearly a year of hoping for a baby, Brenda and her longtime boyfriend, Daniel, welcomed their little girl Emerie this spring. It was a blessing that came at a difficult time. “I feel like it’s so hard being a first-time mom as it is, and getting to experience that during a pandemic makes it even harder. You want to do so much, but at the same time, her safety and health come first,” Brenda says. The family’s low-key holiday celebrations gave Brenda and Daniel plenty of one-on-one time with their baby. Emerie is less than a year old, but she’s already her own person. “Her personality is completely starting to flourish,” Brenda says. “She’s into making noises. She growls like a lion! It’s the craziest thing, and she just started doing that out of nowhere, all by herself! … She’s such a happy baby, it’s crazy. First thing in the morning when we go to wake her, she’s already waiting for us to come pick her up. As soon as she makes eye contact with you, the first thing she does is smile.”

EASY ONE-POT LENTIL SOUP

We can already tell that Brenda is a fantastic mom, which is no surprise because she excels at her other job, too! Brenda has been an assistant on

This delicious plant-based soup is loaded with vegetables, so it’s a healthy way to stay warm on a winter night! This recipe makes four servings, and you can freeze the leftovers for up to a month.

our team for nearly two years, and she brings a lot of enthusiasm to her work. It took her a while to find orthodontics, but when she did, she threw herself into it completely.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 tbsp coconut oil • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 2 shallots, diced • 4 large carrots, sliced thin • 4 stalks celery, sliced thin • Sea salt, to taste • Black pepper, to taste

• 3 cups red potatoes, cubed • 4 cups vegetable broth • 2–3 sprigs fresh rosemary or thyme, chopped • 1 cup uncooked green lentils, rinsed and drained • 2 cups chopped kale

“I was in general dentistry for almost 11 years, and it gets really repetitive. It’s pretty much the same

thing every single day, and I got to the point where I was asking myself, ‘Do I want to do this forever?’” Brenda says. “But then a job opportunity came about at an orthodontics office. I didn’t have orthodontics experience, but they trained me on the job and I loved it.”

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large pot, heat oil over medium heat and sauté garlic, shallots, carrots, and celery for 4–5 minutes, adding salt and pepper to taste. 2. Add potatoes to pot, along with more salt and pepper. Sauté for 2 minutes. 3. Add vegetable broth and herbs, then bring soup to a simmer. 4. Add lentils, stirring until soup returns to a simmer. Then, turn the heat to low and cook soup uncovered for 15–20 minutes. 5. Finally, add kale and additional salt and pepper as needed. Cook for 3–4 minutes, thin soup with additional vegetable broth as needed, and serve!

Here, every patient’s journey is unique, and that keeps Brenda’s work interesting. Next time you come in for a tightening or other treatment, ask her about her little lion cub — she’d love to show off a photo!

The First Dog to Win a Nobel Peace Prize

THE FIRST DOG TO WIN A NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

Foxtrot’s Heroics With the World Food Programme

Just this past October, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to what can only be described as one of the world’s goodest boys — a dog named Foxtrot, known also to his Instagram followers (of which there are nearly 7,000) as @humanitarian_pup. While Foxtrot wasn’t responsible for improvements to auction theory (like Paul Milgrom and Robert Wilson, who won the Nobel Prize for economics) or for a standout career in writing poetry (like Louise Glück, who won the Nobel Prize for literature), this incredible canine shared the Nobel Peace Prize with the World Food Programme (WFP), for their work in combating world hunger. As the organization’s official mascot, Foxtrot shared in the win with the thousands of other WFP workers worldwide. Foxtrot lives in Bangladesh (one of the most densely populated countries in the world) at a WFP outpost that works to supply one of the world’s largest refugee camps. According to an NPR article that spotlighted Foxtrot and the efforts made by his WFP humans, they worked not only to get food to refugees but also to flatten hillsides to make room for shelters for Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar.

him as a 4-week-old pup, and after failing to locate his owners, took him in as one of their own. For the past two years, Foxtrot has helped however he

can to further the WFP’s efforts to end hunger in Bangladesh. This usually includes accompanying his humans while they work, wearing an adorable custom-made WFP cape, and taking to Instagram to raise awareness about how anyone can join in the WFP’s mission. After learning that he and his humans had won the Nobel Peace Prize, Foxtrot didn’t waste the opportunity to share his excitement with his followers. “Woweee,” the pup said. “I … think it would be even more amazing if we didn’t need any peace prizes because peace was the status quo in our world.”

Foxtrot himself became part of the effort to combat world hunger during a WFP beach cleanup in his home country. Workers found

If Foxtrot and his humans keep up the good work that won them the Nobel Peace Prize, it seems like that status quo could be within reach.
