Cincinnati UMADAOP: Bridging Hope and Healing in Communities

T he overarching vision of UMADAOP of Cincinnati is dedicated to delivering a compre- hensive spectrum of behavioral health services, with a specific emphasis on addressing marginalized populations within the urban setting. Our perspective underscores the crucial importance of integrating mental health and substance use disorder interventions, recognizing the inherent need for simultaneous treatment. We are resolute in our commitment to provide programming that acknowledges the cultural dynamics of a group, affirming that the most effective prevention, intervention, and recovery measures for substance abuse are those that encompass these contextual aspects. The lens through which we perceive chemical dependency aligns with the understanding that it represents an ailment encompassing the entire- ty of an individual, encompassing physiological, psychological, social-cultural, and spiritual dimensions. This holistic approach forms the cornerstone of our operational philosophy.

Our foundational principles hinge upon the core belief that addiction is an inherent, progressive, persistent, yet treatable condition that intri- cately impacts every facet of an individual. This encompasses physiological, psychological, social-cultural, and spiritual dimensions, thereby necessitating a comprehensive approach to both treatment and the support journey towards recovery.

Our ultimate aim is to orchestrate transformative programs that embolden both adults and youth, empowering them to cultivate discerning and positive decision-making skills. We firmly believe that such empowerment not only yields profound transformations within their own lives but radiates its impact outward, profoundly benefiting the broader fabric of their communities.

Columbus UMADAOP's impactful presence is reflected in its di- verse range of programs and ini- tiatives: Journey for Recovery Program In the African American community, many people are unaware of counseling and treatment resources for Opioid addiction. This lack of knowledge creates a gap between individuals addicted to drugs and treat- ment; resulting in major consequences such as job loss, domestic violence, criminal offenses, homeless- ness etc. African Americans are also often reluctant to discuss when they need help or seek treatment, because of fear, shame and stigma, leading to under- estimating the effects and impact of addiction on their families. The Journey to Recovery project will bridge the gap between individuals in need of opioid treat- ment and counseling and a provider through educa- tion, mentoring, and referrals. Circle for Recovery Ohio (CFRO) The Circle for Recovery programs (CFRO) is located in and run by nine Urban Minority Alcohol and Drug Addiction Outreach Programs (UMADAOPs) across the state of Ohio.

L ima UMADAOP offers programming based on the principle that preventing and treating substance abuse is most effective when cultural dynamics are acknowledged and inte- grated into the realms of prevention, treatment, recovery, and education. The perspective adopted perceives chemical depen- dency as a comprehensive ailment affecting the entirety of an in- dividual, encompassing physiological, psychological, social-cul- tural, and spiritual facets, all necessitating a holistic approach. Objective The central objective of the UMADAOPs is to deliver culturally tailored prevention services to Ohio’s African-American and Hispanic/Latino American communities. These preventive strategies encompass Information Sharing, Knowledge Dissemi- nation, Alternative Approaches, Issue Detection and Referral, as well as Communi- ty-Driven Processes and Environmental Approaches in line with guidelines by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP). Moreover, Ohio’s UMADAOPs en- gage in programming designed to fulfill the four prevention objectives outlined by OhioMHAS. • To increase abstinence from alcohol and illicit drug use • To defer the onset of alcohol use • To eliminate high-risk use of alcohol and other legal drugs • To impact environmental “risk” factors in communities All programming activities are structured to provide a foundation to build and re- build positive, violence and substance free lifestyles, families and communities. This is achieved by increasing protective factors within the community and family do- mains. We Offer The Following Adult Services Screening: All participants will receive a S-Birt screening to determine the severity of substance use and identify the appropriate level of treatment. Services are directed to individuals who do not have severe withdrawal symptoms but whose medical and psychological conditions require a lower level of care to begin the recovery process, prevent relapse and improve the potential for sustained sobriety.

Inpatient Services: Inpatient programs are ideal for individuals with a high potential to relapse. Inpatient treatment, also referred to as residential treatment, provides the highest level of rehab services for clients diagnosed with alcohol or other drug addiction. Over 70% of our housing graduates continue to remain so- ber, be gainfully employed and live independently in the community. Outpatient Services: The Intensive Outpatient Pro- gram (IOP) and Non-Intensive Outpatient Program (NIOP) provide a structured, intensive level of care for treatment of adults with substance abuse disor- ders. Individuals receive information, assistance, sup- port and motivation that will allow them to maintain abstinence from alcohol and other drugs in individual and group sessions. CFRO: Circle For Re-entry Ohio : Funded by OMHAS The CFRO program was developed in 1996 out of a recognition for the need to support ex-criminal offenders in making a healthful and successful transition back into commu- nity life. As a supportive resource to indi- viduals and families the UMADAOP orga- nization has dedicated its energies toward forging curricula and various training mod- els that both prevent, address and advance recovery from chemical dependency. Education & Prevention One of our goals here at the UMADAOP is to attempt to prevent youth from having drug issues later in life by educating about the effects of drugs now. Most of our efforts pertaining to this program involve studying new approaches and developing innovative ways to implement them. We evaluate our success in this field by gathering qualitative

and quantitative data, and assessing the en- vironment in which they live to catch up to the trends of drug use and attempt to put a stop to it. Treatment Services We see every challenge as an opportunity, and this initiative helps us ensure that our partners are better prepared to manage the unique situations they find themselves in. We are invested in an innovative approach that empowers our community and delivers the support they need, when they need it.

F ounded in 1980, UMADAOP Lucas County has maintained an unwavering dedication to nurturing well-being and vitality within our local community, emerging as a distinguished provider of Behavioral Healthcare Services. Our resolute commitment to prevention is not just a mere choice; it stands as an absolute imperative. It serves as the very cornerstone of our offerings, firmly rooted in the belief in its potential to enact transformative changes in lives. In our conviction, treatment is not only profoundly effective but also holds the potential to be lifesaving. This core belief propels our mission forward, particularly in the face of the all-encompassing opioid crisis, which relentlessly claims the lives of over 100,000 indi- viduals each year due to fatal overdoses. This crisis has surpassed the toll taken by traffic accidents and firearms, underscoring opioid addiction as an urgent public health crisis that profoundly impacts us all, whether on a personal level or through the narratives we encounter in our daily lives. The devastating repercussions of opioids reverberate with an intensity reminiscent of the zenith of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and early 1990s. Nevertheless, the resolute control and eventual recovery achieved during the AIDS crisis underscore our collective ability to surmount seemingly insurmountable challenges when we stand united. The combined efforts of government, healthcare systems, law enforcement agencies, and every individual have the power to forge a path towards conquering this formidable epidemic. At UMADAOP Lucas County, it is our genuine desire for you to understand that we genuinely care about your well-being. We are whol- ly committed to playing our integral role in this monumental battle and firmly hold faith in the strength that arises from our collective resolve to emerge triumphant in the face of this crisis.
